Executive Leadership

Alan L. Goldbloom, MD
President and Chief Executive Officer

Alan L. Goldbloom, MD, has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota since 2003.

A native of Montreal, Dr. Goldbloom completed undergraduate studies at McGill University, and graduated in Medicine from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario in 1973. Following pediatric residency training at Children's Hospital in Boston and The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, he practiced pediatrics in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he also served on the faculty at Dalhousie University. In 1987, Dr. Goldbloom moved to Toronto, initially as Director of Postgraduate Medical Education, and later as Associate Chair of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto, and Associate Pediatrician-in-Chief at The Hospital for Sick Children, Canada’s largest children’s hospital. In 1993, Dr. Goldbloom joined the executive management team of the hospital, and ultimately became its Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

Dr. Goldbloom currently serves on the boards of the Minnesota Hospital Association, the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Minneapolis Community & Technical College Foundation, and Virtual Pediatric Systems, LLC. In addition, he has recently completed terms of service on the Boards of Child Health Corporation of America (CHCA) and the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI).

David A. Brumbaugh
Vice President Human Resources

David A. Brumbaugh joined Children’s as Vice President of Human Resources in 2003. Prior to joining Children’s, he served as vice president of human resources at Cigna Health Care and vice president of human resources for the Honeywell, Inc. - Space and Aviation Control Strategic Business Unit in Phoenix, Arizona. David’s community service includes current Chairman for the Minneapolis Career and Technical Education Consortium, Vice-chairman for the Healthcare Partnership Advisory Board, member of the HealthForce Minnesota Executive Alliance, and past Chairman for the Roosevelt High School Health Careers Advisory Board.

Maria C. Christu, JD
General Counsel and Vice President Advocacy and Health Policy

Maria C. Christu joined Children’s as its first general counsel in 2003. Prior to joining Children’s, Maria spent nine years as an associate general counsel at UnitedHealth Group in Minnetonka. Maria began her legal career in the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, where she served as counsel for various health licensing boards as well as the Minnesota Department of Health. Maria serves on the Boards of Directors of Way to Grow and Children’s Law Center, and is a member of the Minnesota Advisory Board of the Children’s Defense Fund.

Roxanne Fernandes, RN, MHA
Chief Nursing Officer

Roxanne Fernandes joined Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota as Chief Nursing Officer in May 2011. She has more than 30 years of experience in pediatrics - most recently as executive director of the University of California, San Francisco, Children’s Hospital. Ms. Fernandes holds a master’s degree from the University of San Francisco and a bachelor’s of science in nursing from San Jose State University.

Phillip Kibort, MD, MBA
Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs

Dr. Phillip Kibort became vice president system advancement at Children’s in 1996. He became Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs in 2002. Dr. Kibort was a pediatric gastroenterologist at Minnesota Gastroenterology from 1982-1994. He has written and published on issues of management and quality in healthcare, and teaches on medical quality to healthcare providers at the University of St. Thomas in the Twin Cities. He is a member of the American College of Physician Executives and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr Kibort has served on the boards of Ronald McDonald House Charities and Way to Grow, and was president of Temple of Aaron from 2003-2005.

Jerry Massmann, MBA, CPA, BS
Chief Financial Officer

Jerry Massmann has served as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota since 1995. Prior to Children’s, he served in financial executive roles for MultiCare Health System in Tacoma, Washington and Health One Corporation (predecessor of Allina Hospitals & Clinics). Previous to his direct experience within the health care industry, he was a financial consultant with Touche Ross & Company (now Deloitte Consulting). His early career included teaching at the University of Northern Iowa. Mr. Massmann’s community service has included board memberships with The Bridge for Runaway Youth and VocalEssence.

David S. Overman
Chief Operating Officer

David S. Overman has been serving as Chief Operating Officer for Children’s since November 1, 2008. Prior to his current appointment, he served as the Chief Information Officer along with expanded responsibilities for Health Information Management, Pharmacy and Radiology. Prior to joining Children’s, Mr. Overman most recently served as vice president of information systems at Express Scripts, a large national company that manages pharmacy benefits. During his 10 years at Express Scripts, he led an information technology staff of more than 800 employees.

Mr. Overman currently serves on the board of Ronald McDonald House Charities, and is Chair-Elect of the board in 2012.

Theresa Pesch
Executive Director, Children’s Foundation, and
Vice President, Development, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota

Theresa Pesch joined Children's in February 2007. Ms. Pesch leads the team that has launched groundbreaking philanthropic partnerships designed to spur engagement and support from local and national community leaders. Under Ms. Pesch's leadership, the Foundation has dramatically increased its funding success, thus enabling it to provide substantial improvements in the facilities and medical technology that serve the region's pediatric population. Innovative collaborations with the arts and theatre community, the consumer electronics industry, and the nation's leading health care company have simultaneously created a better and more healing experience for children and families while also delivering a unique and fulfilling experience for the citizen and corporate philanthropists who support these initiatives. Prior to joining Children's, Ms. Pesch, was at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia, Minnesota, where she served as vice president of marketing and development and executive director of the Ridgeview Foundation, and where she led the most successful capital campaign in its history. Originally trained in nursing, Ms. Pesch has 23 years experience in health care administration, public health participation, and local community leadership including chairing a local school board and Chamber of Commerce.

Carol Wilcox, RN, MS
Senior Hospital Administrator, St. Paul Site Campus and
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services

Carol Wilcox joined Children's in 2008, as the Director of Access and System Support and became Senior Director for Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services in 2010. She served as Interim Chief Nursing Officer from June 2010 to June 2011 before accepting her current position as administrator for Children’s St. Paul campus.

Carol has held many leadership roles in both care delivery and health plan organizations in the Twin Cities. She has presented at the national level on different health care topics and holds a Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota and a BA in Nursing from the College of Saint Catherine.
