When six-year-old Ashley was asked by Make-A-Wish what she would like to wish for, she responded, “I want the Vikings to beat the Packers.” Her request was a little outside the realm of what Make-A-Wish could promise, so they granted her second wish: a trip to Disney World. Needless to say, Ashley is a huge Vikings fan.
Ashley was diagnosed with leukemia 10 months ago and has been receiving chemotherapy at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. After hearing about her first wish, her doctor, Joanna Perkins, decided to reach out and see if Ashley could go to the Vikings-Packers game at Mall of America Field.
Thanks to the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission (which donated tickets to sit in a luxury suite for Ashley and her mom) and the Vikings (who coordinated an incredible pre-game visit for Ashley, her mom, and Dr. Perkins), Ashley had a VIP Vikings day.
Ashley spent an hour out on the field before the game. She presented some cheerleaders with a poster that she made. She got her picture taken with former Vikings players, and the Vikings mascots. She got to high-five the players on their way into the locker room (including her three favorites: Percy Harvin, Adrian Peterson, and Jared Allen). And she was in the middle of the action as the players were introduced before the start of the game.
Her wish seemed to be coming true when the Vikings took a lead into halftime. Even though her favorite team eventually lost, she and her mom shared an experience they will never forget.
