Outcomes
Children’s cardiovascular team delivers next-generation care. That’s why Children’s cardiovascular treatment results are consistently among the best in the nation, despite treating some of the sickest children in the region. More than 9,000 children with heart conditions are under the care of the Children’s team.
Cardiovascular treatment results are monitored by the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS). The Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) is a national database that compares data from higher-volume children’s hospitals around the U.S. Using a Case Mix Index, PHIS evaluates hospitals’ results while adjusting data to account for the severity of illnesses treated by each program.
According to PHIS, Children’s cardiovascular patients spend less time in the hospital, given the severity of their conditions. Children's also experiences low mortality rates compared to the other hospitals in the PHIS database. This is true both for patients treated with surgery and with other medical treatments.
Children’s is ranked as one of the top eight pediatric hospitals in the country for quality and safety (and the only pediatric hospital in Minnesota) by the respected Leapfrog Group.

Reviewing and comparing outcomes data can be complex as every hospital collects and presents data differently. Also, hospitals sometimes treat unique, difficult-to-compare patients. If you have a question about Children’s data, we encourage you to speak to your physician. We are happy to talk to you about program outcomes and the prognosis for your child.
