Ferritin, the major iron storage compound, provides a tissue reserve of iron readily available for formation of hemoglobin and other heme proteins. Measurement of serum ferritin is valuable in distinguishing iron deficiency anemias caused by low iron stores, from those resulting from inadequate iron utilization.

Ferritin levels are falsely elevated with inflammation, tissue destruction, liver disease, malignancy and iron therapy. Heterophile antibodies may interfere with immunoassay tests.
