Logistics

Test Indications:

Useful for the identification of folate deficiency following a balanced meal (erythrocyte folate concentration rises more slowly than serum folate) and for evaluation of individuals with low serum concentration of both folate and iron.

Special Instructions:

See Collection. A Hematocrit must be ordered within 24 hours prior to or with the collection of an RBC Folate specimen. If one has not been done, one will be ordered and performed. The RBC Folate test requires a current hematocrit value.

Collection:

Routine venipuncture, mix thoroughly by gentle inversion. Immediately wrap specimen in foil to protect from light and transport to the lab.

Special Processing:

Lab Staff: Do not centrifuge.

A Hematocrit value performed within 24 hrs of collection of the RBC Folate specimen is required with the submission of the sample to Mayo. If a Hematocrit has not been done, order one on this specimen before processing for Mayo. You will be prompted for the Hematocrit value in Mayo Access.

Transfer 1 mL specimen into a Mayo amber vial (Supply T192). Freeze specimen immediately. Store and ship at frozen temperatures. Forward promptly.
