Test Indications:
|
S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH) is a by-product of all methylation reactions and is rapidly metabolized to homocysteine. Increased levels of SAH may occur when the intracellular concentration of homocysteine increases. Since SAH has been show to inhibit methylation dependent reactions the ratio of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) to SAH is often used as an index of methylation status.
S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is the major methyl donor in numerous methylation reactions such as proteins, DNA, phospholipids and neurotransmitters. Decreased levels of SAMe commonly occur in the presence of folate and cobalamin (vitamin B12) deficiency. Low SAMe levels have been associated with depression, dementia, vacuolar myelopathy and liver disease.
