Lab Order Codes:

TXOG

Synonyms:

Toxoplasma Antibody, IgG only, serum; Toxoplasma Ab, IgG, Serum; Toxoplasma gondii; Toxoplasmosis; T. gondii

CPT Codes:

86777 – Antibody; Toxoplasma

Test Includes:

Toxoplasma IgG antibody level reported in IU/mL.

Logistics

Test Indications:

This test is useful for indication of past or recent infection with Toxoplasma gondii. A single positive specimen is only indicative of a prior infection. Seroconversion indicates infection subsequent to the first negative specimen.

Lab Testing Sections:

Serology - Sendouts

Referred to:

Mayo Medical Laboratories (Test: TOXGP)

Phone Numbers:

MIN Lab: 612-813-6280

STP Lab: 651-220-6550

Test Availability:

Daily, 24 hours

Turnaround Time:

1 - 3 days, test set up Monday - Saturday

Special Instructions:

Indicate if ocular toxoplasmosis is suspected. Specimens that have been heat-treated should not be used.

Specimen

Specimen Type:

Blood

Container:

Red top tube

Draw Volume:

1.5 mL (Minimum: 1.2 mL) blood

Processed Volume:

0.5 mL (Minimum: 0.4 mL) serum

Collection:

Routine blood collection

Special Processing:

Lab Staff: Centrifuge specimen, remove serum aliquot into a screw-capped round bottom plastic vial. Store and ship at refrigerated temperatures. Forward promptly.

Patient Preparation:

None

Sample Rejection:

Specimens that have been heat-treated or have obvious microbial contamination should not be used. Specimens other than serum, mislabeled or unlabeled specimens. Gross hemolysis; gross lipemia

Interpretive

Reference Range:

Reference Value (IU/mL):

Interpretation:

< or = 9 IU/mL

Negative

10 – 11 IU/mL

Equivocal

> or = 12 IU/mL

Positive

Critical Values:

N/A

Limitations:

IgG is not useful for diagnosing infection in infants <6 months of age. IgG antibodies in that age group are usually the result of passive transfer from the mother. A single toxoplasma IgG antibody assay cannot be used to diagnose recent infection.

The IgM assay should be used to diagnose an acute infection with Toxoplasma gondii.

Methodology:

Multiplex Flow Immunoassay (MFI)

Updates:

9/14/2004: This test has been changed at MML from a qualitative to a quantitative test. Please note that reference ranges have been changed to numeric values to aid in the level of antibody level.
6/11/2013: Method change, previously listed as ELFA. Note reference value change.
