Test Indications:

A person at continuous risk of exposure to rabies should have a serum sample tested for rabies antibody every six months.

A person at frequent risk of exposure to rabies should have a serum sample tested for rabies antibody every two years.

Kansas State University will conduct one of two types of RFFIT depending on the request; Screen: reported at <1:5, >1:5 or >1:50 to know if a booster of rabies vaccine is needed or Endpoint: to know the exact titer. This test should not be used to determine disease.

Special Processing:

Lab Staff: Serum should be removed from the clot, placed into a screw-capped round bottom plastic vial. Store at refrigerated temperatures. For shipping, pack the specimen in a leak proof container with absorbent material. This package should be placed inside a second container with ice packs or dry ice. Overnight mail service is recommended.
