Test Includes:

Platelet antibody detection in the presence and absence of suspected drug. There are additional charges for testing more than one drug.

Logistics

Test Indications:

Diagnose drug induced immune thrombocytopenia (DDPA). The most common drugs implicated are heparin, quinine and quinidine. The serum from patients with DDPA can be shown to react with platelets only when drug is present. When an unexpected and unexplained thrombocytopenia occurs and AITP is ruled out, a DDPA should be suspected.

Specimen

Specimen Type:

Whole blood

Container:

Red top tube (SST tubes are not acceptable)

Draw Volume:

8 - 10 mL blood

Processed Volume:

4 - 5 mL serum

Collection:

All specimens submitted to the Transfusion Service must be appropriately labeled at the bedside with the time and date of collection, and the signature of the individual collecting the specimen. A completed order, either through the HIS or general requisition must accompany each specimen.

Special Processing:

Lab Staff: Centrifuge. Store and ship serum at refrigerator temperature (4-6ºC). If specimen is to be shipped overnight, freeze and ship on dry ice.

Patient Preparation:

The patient must be positively identified when the specimen is collected. The label on the blood specimen must correspond with the identification on the patient’s Medical Record wrist or ankle band and on the physician’s/practitioner’s orders.

Sample Rejection:

Gross hemolysis, sample placed in a serum separator tube, specimen tube not properly labeled.
