Meet Our Staff

  Kristen Appert, RN, CNP-Pediatrics, received undergraduate nursing degree from Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, and her master's degree from The College of St. Catherine in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She joined the hematology/oncology program at Children's of Minnesota in 2000. Her areas of interest include pediatric hematology with a focus in hemophilia and bleeding disorders.
  Anne Bendel, MD, attended medical school and completed her pediatric residency and pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Bendel joined Children's of Minnesota hematology/oncology program in 1994. She has an interest in neuro-oncology.
  Bruce Bostrom, MD, attended Mayo medical school and completed his pediatric residency at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. He completed his pediatric hematology/oncology, bone marrow transplantation, and clinical pharmacology fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Bostrom joined the hematology/oncology program at Children's of Minnesota in 1988. His areas of interest include leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, and targeted cancer therapy.
  Julie Chu, MD, attended medical school at the University of North Dakota. She completed her pediatric residency at the University of Minnesota and pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at Children's Hospital Los Angeles in California. Dr. Chu joined Children's of Minnesota hematology/oncology program in 2005. Her areas of interest include general oncology, solid tumors, and bone tumors.
  Jocelyn Gorlin, RN, CNP - Pediatrics, received her undergraduate nursing degree from Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania, and master's degree from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. She joined the hematology/oncology program at Children's of Minnesota in 2002. Her interests include hemophilia, vonWillebrand's disease, and other coagulopathies.
  Melissa Hansen, RN, CNP, Pediatrics, earned her nursing degree from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul Minnesota; and her graduate degree from the University of Minnesota. She joined the Children's of Minnesota hematology/oncology program in 2002. Interests included neuro-oncology and primary care issues
  Margaret Heisel Kurth, MD, attended medical school and completed her pediatric residency at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Kurth completed her pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at Children's Hospital Los Angeles in California. She joined the hematology/oncology program at Children's of Minnesota in 1982. Her areas of interest include pediatric bleeding disorders, bleeding disorders in women, and pediatric thrombosis.
  Jane Hennessy, RN, CNP – Pediatrics, MPH, received her nursing degree from Carroll-Columbia College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and earned her undergraduate degree, master's degree in nursing, and master's degree in public health from the University of Minnesota. Jane began working in the hematology/oncology program at Children's of Minnesota as a registered nurse in 1989 and became a nurse practitioner in 2000. Her special interests include sickle-cell disease, bleeding disorders, transition to adult care, and preventative care.
  Kimberly Jacobson, RN, CNP - Pediatrics, received her undergraduate nursing degree and master's degree from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul. She began working at Children's of Minnesota as a registered nurse in hematology/oncology in 1999 and became a pediatric nurse practitioner in 2004. Her interests include leukemia and bleeding disorders.
  Sue Kearney, MD, attended Mayo Medical School and completed her pediatric residency and her pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at the Children's Hospital Boston & Dana-Farber Cancer Institutes. Dr. Kearney joined the hematology/oncology program at Children's Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota in 2010. Dr. Kearney's primary interests are in pediatric hematology with an emphasis on iron-related disorders and hemostasis and thrombosis in children and young adults.
  Mary Langevin, RN, CNP, received her undergraduate and master’s degrees from Metropolitan State University, and holds certifications as a pediatric oncology nurse and board certified holistic nurse. She worked as a staff nurse and clinical educator on the inpatient hematology/oncology floor at Children's - Minneapolis for 10 years, and joined the clinic staff in 2007 as a family nurse practitioner. Her interests include CAM therapies, and late effects of cancer treatments in adolescents and young adults.
  Mylynda Livingston RN, CNP - Pediatrics, received her undergraduate nursing degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and her master's degree from the University of Minnesota. She began working at Children's of Minnesota as a registered nurse in hematology/oncology in 2003 and became a pediatric nurse practitioner in 2006. Her interests include leukemia, general oncology, and patient education.
  Nancy McAllister, MD, attended medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin and pediatric residency at Columbus Children’s Hospital. She was a pediatrician for three years in Boise, Idaho before completing her hematology/oncology fellowship at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. After two years of managing their sarcoma service, she joined the Children's of Minnesota hematology/oncology program in 2006. Her areas of interest include management of head and neck cancers, and sarcomas. She works with Drs. Sidman and Sullivan in managing head and neck cancers through a multi-disciplinary head and neck cancer service.
  Linda Madsen, RN, CNP – Pediatrics, earned her nursing degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and earned her graduate degree from the University of Colorado in Denver. She joined the Children's of Minnesota hematology/oncology program in 1993. Linda's interests include neuro-oncology, adolescent issues, patient education, and informatics.
  Yoav Messinger, MD, attended medical school at Tel Aviv University in Israel and trained in general pediatrics at the Golda Medical Center in Israel. He completed his pediatric residency and pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Messinger joined the hematology/oncology program at Children's of Minnesota in 2000. His interests include medical informatics and its application to oncology.
  Kristin Moquist, RN, CNP – Pediatrics, attended nursing school at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and received her master's degree at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul. Kristin began working as a registered nurse at Children's of Minnesota in 1997 and became a nurse practitioner in the hematology/oncology program in 2001. Her interests include sickle cell, leukemia, and integrative medicine.
  Stephen Nelson, MD, attended medical school and completed his pediatric residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. His pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship was completed at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Nelson joined the hematology/oncology program at Children's of Minnesota in 1993. His interests include caring for patients with hemoglobinopathies and other blood disorders.
  Dawn Niess, RN, CNP – Pediatrics, completed her undergraduate nursing degree at Bethel College in St. Paul and graduate degree at the University of Minnesota. Dawn joined the hematology/oncology program at Children's of Minnesota in 1998. Her interests include stem cell and general oncology.
  Skye Peltier MPH, PA-C, attended the Augsburg College Physician Assistant Program. She received her degree in 2005 and has worked in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Minnesota and at Children's Hospitals and Clinics since graduation. She also has a Masters Degree in Public Health from the University of Minnesota and had worked as a health educator prior to attending Augsburg College. Her areas of interest are bleeding and clotting disorders with an emphasis on young women with bleeding disorders.
  Joanna Perkins, MD, MS, attended medical school at the University of Minnesota where she also completed her pediatric residency and pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship. Dr. Perkins also received a master's degree from the University of Minnesota in clinical research. She joined the Children's of Minnesota hematology/oncology program in 2003. Her area of interest is in late effects of childhood cancer therapy and leukemia / lymphoma.
  Heather Quammen, RN, CNP - Pediatrics, received her nursing degree and master's degree from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul. Heather began working at Children's of Minnesota as a registered nurse in 1995 and joined the hematology/oncology program as a nurse practitioner in 2002. Her areas of interest include leukemia, end-of-life care and bereavement, and pain management.
  Lori Ranney, RN, CNP - Pediatrics, received her undergraduate nursing degree from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, and received her master's degree from the University of Minnesota. She began working as a registered nurse in oncology at the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital - Fairview in 2002. She joined Children's of Minnesota as a pediatric nurse practitioner in 2008. Her interests include general oncology and pain management.
  Jawhar Rawwas, MD, attended medical school at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. He completed his pediatric residency at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse, New York. His pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship was completed at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His interests include neuroblastoma, soft tissue sarcomas, and thrombotic disorders.
  Michael Richards, MD, PhD, received his medical degree and doctorate of philosophy in biological chemistry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Richards completed his pediatric residency and pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He joined the hematology/oncology program at Children's of Minnesota in 2003. Dr. Richards has an interest in bone marrow transplantation, high-risk neuroblastoma, and general hematology/oncology.
  Angela Robbins, RN, CNP – Pediatrics, received her nursing degree from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul and her graduate degree from the University of Minnesota. She previously worked as a registered nurse at Children's of Minnesota and joined the hematology/oncology program in 2005. Her interests include adolescent health, sickle-cell disease, and leukemia.
  Vicki Schaefers, RN, CNP – Pediatrics, attended nursing school at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, and received her graduate degree from the University of Minnesota. Vicki began working as a registered nurse at Children's of Minnesota in 1989 and joined the hematology/oncology program as a nurse practitioner in 1998. Her area of interest is in the long-term effects of treatment for childhood cancer.
  Kris Ann P. Schultz, MD, graduated summa cum laude from Drake University (B.A.) and summa cum laude from Loyola University (M.D). She completed her pediatric residency and pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Minnesota and received a Master of Science degree in clinical research during the course of her fellowship. Dr. Schultz is the Center Director of the Comprehensive Care Center for Pleuropulmonary Blastoma and Related Rare Diseases. She is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Schultz joined the Hematology Oncology program at Children's of Minnesota in 2008 and has particular interest and expertise in the care of children with leukemia, brain tumors, ovarian tumors and other rare childhood cancers.


  Susan Sencer, MD, attended medical school at the University of Minnesota where she also completed her pediatric residency and pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship training. She joined the hematology/oncology program at Children's of Minnesota in 1991. Her areas of interest include oncology, supportive care of children with cancer, and integrative medicine.
  Clark Smith II, MD, attended medical school and completed pediatric residency and pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Minnesota. He joined the hematology/oncology program at Children’s of Minnesota in 1995. His interests include benign hematological disease, coagulation, thrombosis, and blood biomaterial interactions.
  Amy Wein, RN, CNP – Pediatrics, completed her nursing degree at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and received her master's degree at the University of Colorado in Denver. Amy joined the hematology/oncology program at Children's of Minnesota as a nurse practitioner in 2001. Her areas of interest include general oncology, patient education, and symptom management.

Refer A Patient

Physicians can refer a patient or consult a pediatric hematologist/oncologist 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As a referring physician, you remain the primary physician, fully involved and apprised of your patient’s progress.
