Electrophysiology Studies

An electrophysiology study involves the insertion of an electrode catheter into the heart in order to study its electrical properties. Electrophysiology studies are performed both to diagnose heart conditions and to access the heart for therapeutic treatment or correction of certain abnormalities.

The electrophysiology lab at Children’s is the only dedicated pediatric electrophysiology lab in the Upper Midwest. More than 3,000 ablations have performed. State-of-the-art equipment includes advanced three-dimensional mapping, radiofrequency, and cryoablation technology for arrhythmia therapies.

There is a 95 percent success rate for tachycardia associated with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome as well as refractory cases of PSVT, ectopic atrial tachycardia, the permanent form of junctional reciprocating tachycardia, and selected cases of ventricular tachycardia in children.

For more information, see the Pediatric and Congenital Arrhythmia (PCA) Program or call Children’s Heart Clinic at 1-800-938-0301.
