Brain Tumor Program

Children’s treatment results for brain tumors consistently rank among the top U.S. programs participating in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program.

Children’s brain tumor program is the largest pediatric brain tumor program in Minnesota and provides diagnosis and treatment for all types of tumors of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), including cerebellar astrocytomas, medulloblastomas, ependymomas, and primitive neuroectodermal tumors, among others.

Patients in the brain tumor program have access to clinical trials and the latest information through Children’s Oncology Group. At Children’s, the majority of hematology/oncology patients are enrolled in one or more clinical trials.

In the brain tumor program, children receive medical care in a convenient, coordinated “one-stop-shop” environment. The clinics are available at both Children’s – Minneapolis and Children’s – St. Paul.

The Team

In Children’s nationally unique model, your child’s or teen’s care is spearheaded and coordinated by a board-certified hematologist/oncologist, who leads a highly experienced team of multidisciplinary professionals. The team helps to manage both outpatient and inpatient care, in part because children with brain tumors have complex needs requiring expertise from many specialties.

The neuro-oncology (brain tumor) team includes specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, pain management, neuropsychology, and radiation oncology. Other disciplines such as ophthalmology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nutrition help patients adjust and gain function physically, psychologically, and emotionally.

Innovative program highlights include:

  • 3 Tesla MRI System. This powerful MRI imaging system allows neurosurgeons to map tumors prior to tumor excision.
  • Accomplished, multidisciplinary neurosurgery team, experienced in treating a wide range of brain tumors.
  • Intraoperative MRI, which allows surgeons to pinpoint tumor location in real time during surgery.
  • Proactive educational interventions. Neuropsychologists evaluate the effects of both cancer and cancer treatment on a child’s memory, learning, social development, and interaction, then work with teachers and parents to develop strategies to help children reach their maximum intellectual potential.
