Present:  Jane Braun, Kim Martinez, Anne Cherek, Kelly Stephens, Carolyn Hahn, Barb Small, Marcia Rudin

Time of Next Call:  Tuesday, July 6, 2004 11:00 a.m. CST

Agenda:
Accreditation Boot Camp
:

  • Jane had just returned from Colorado Springs where she helped facilitate Accreditation “Boot Camp” hosted by the Western Region. “Boot Camp” is designed for CAC directors who are preparing for NCA site visits.  Jane said 30 directors, half of which came from the Midwest Region, attended the 2 ½ day training and it was very successful.  Jane said that the attendees felt prepared for their upcoming site visits by the end of the training session, especially in regards to the “nuts and bolts” about writing CAC standards.  Jane said she hopes to be able to offer this training three to four times per year in the future and is planning to hold a similar session in St. Paul in November.  Further information about this training will be included in the MRCAC Fall Conference brochure, which will be mailed out in July.

General Announcements:

  • Kim said that the Videotaping Pros/Cons questionnaire results are in the process of being finalized and will be shared with everyone as soon as they are ready.  Kim also said that the MRCAC Fall Conference Save the Date cards were sent out and the Conference brochure will be mailed out in July.  Registration for the Fall Conference will also be available on the MRCAC website.  We will let everyone know when people may register online.
  • Jane reported that a June session of Basic Medical Training Academy was added after the May session was canceled.  There are still a few openings left, but it is almost full. The June session dates are Thursday, June 24th  - Saturday, June 26th. The Advanced session of Medical Training Academy in October is almost full. Jane also said that we are in the process of coordinating “Medical Training Academy on the road” later this year.  Details about that session will be posted on the website.
  • Kelly Stephens joined us for the first time as the new Kansas Advisory Board member.  Kelly has taken the place of Brenda Sharpe on the board.

State Updates:
Indiana
: They had their last chapter meeting 2 weeks ago and were excited to discuss the addition of several new CAC’s and the hiring of a new Executive Director in Indianapolis.  Carolyn also reported that the state prosecutor’s office applied for a Family Justice Fund grant.  The grant focus is primarily for domestic abuse issues, and kid cases are not included in the proposal as of yet, however, they hope that kid cases/ CAC’s will be included at some point and are crossing their fingers.  Carolyn also reported that the “Finding Words” program is in its second year and continues to travel statewide.

Kansas: On May 3rd, 2004, the governor signed new legislation for Children Advocacy Centers in Kansas. Legislation includes criteria for becoming a CAC and monies earned by fining $100 per perpetrator found guilty of abuse.  The chapter is holding a special meeting in August to draft their first grant proposal. The next official state chapter meeting will be held in October.

Iowa: Barb reported that they were re-accredited 3 weeks ago during a site review done by Ben Murray and Debbie Rollston.  The next state chapter meeting will be held on June 9th, during which an election for new state officers will be held.

Illinois: In May they held their 3rd annual Director’s Retreat in which 33 directors participated.  Marcia said that in the past the retreat was 2 days and 1 night, but this year is it was changed to 2 days and 2 nights. Marcia said the new time frame allowed more time for participants to network.  Their next training event is “Finding Words” scheduled for the 2nd week of July.  The session is full and a waiting list has been started.  They will hold another “Finding Words” session the 3rd week of November.

Respectfully submitted,
Anne Cherek, Administrative Assistant
