Advisory Board Minutes from January 4, 2005

Present: Monica Maurer, Jane Braun, Anne Cherek, Ben Murray, Marg Yaroslaski, Sue Tesdahl, Paula Condol

Next Call: Tuesday, February 1, 2005

Agenda:

  • Both Jane and Ben talked about the NCA Board elections and some positions that will be up for renewal. The positions that will be available in the next election process are: mental health, victim assistance, child protection, and several At Large seats. Ben stated that to be in the mental health, victim assistant and/or child protection seat, the elected must be an active and practicing professional in the respective area. To be an At Large member however, the elected does not have to be a practicing professional.  Jane asked each state chapter representative to elect a candidate for each position that will be open, and on our Board call in March 2005, everyone will discuss and choose who we would like to elect as a Midwest representative to the NCA Board and respective open positions. The goal will be to put 4-5 representatives from the Midwest regional on the next ballot and make it a point to “campaign” for those we choose. Ben and Jane stated that in the most recent NCA Board election, the Midwest was poorly represented. Anne sent out a reminder email to all chapter presidents and will send another email reminding everyone of the March Board call deadline, in Mid-February.
  • Jane reported that the next RFP is still not yet out but said that it is hopeful to be out by the end of February.

State Updates:
South Dakota
:
While Monica did not report any new state updates at this time, she did report that the SD State chapter will be holding their next meeting in early February.

Ohio: No update at this time.

Kansas: Marg reported that their state chapter is trying to get a dual declaration, by the Governor, that February be both “Child Sexual Abuse and Sexual Assault Awareness Month”. A press conference is scheduled to announce if this will be officially declared in the state of Kansas or not.

North Dakota: Paula reported that they are working with a lobbyist, who works closely with the CAC’s within the state, to help aid them with the legislation process. They are excited to see what possible outcomes may be.

Iowa:  Sue reported that the $100,000 their chapter was awarded by their state legislature, due to be dispersed in July of ’04 through the Department of Human Services, still has not been distributed.  Currently, a lobbyist in Des Moines is helping the chapter write legislation for future sessions, and also writing a letter pressing the Governor to put CAC’s in his $2million dollar budget plan, due to the fact that the $100,000 originally allotted towards the CAC’s, has not been given out.

Minnesota:  Jane reported that Victor Vieth is back in MN, currently working in Winona, MN and starting a school with the focus being on Child Abuse. He has asked legislatures for $500,000 to be distributed to the other CAC’s in MN and also to help support his school.

Respectfully Submitted,
Anne Cherek
