Midwest Regional Children’s Advocacy Center
Advisory Board Meeting Minutes
July 6, 2005
Present: Monica Maurer, Jan Watts, Ben Murray, Darcy Babcock, Sue Tesdahl, Paula Condol, Patty Miller, Jane Braun, Kim Martinez, Anne Cherek
Date of next Call: August 2, 2005 11:00 AM CST
Agenda:
- Jane asked for feedback on Leadership Conference and everyone had rave reviews. Many new people attending for the first time felt it was a rewarding experience.
- Jane reported that the MRCAC submitted their grant application on June 30, 2005. The proposal highlighted a few key items:
o Giving up to $5,000 in training funds to each state with the guideline that states will send in requests for funds stating their intent for fund usage. Guidelines regarding this funding will be sent out if the grant is awarded to MRCAC.
o MRCAC will host a Fall Summit which will hopefully include problems, protocols, etc, related to the issue of Methamphetamines. Further specifics about a Summit will be communicated if the grant is awarded to MRCAC.
- Jane also reported that the MRCAC website, which was currently down for domain transfer, is up and running in a preliminary stage with final edits being completed within the next month. Children’s Hospitals and Clinics have taken over hosting the MRCAC website. The address remains the same www.mrcac.org.
- Jane asked everyone for an “official yes” for the two NCA Board candidates the Midwest has come up with to fill the openings for Mental Health and Ad Hoc seats. Sandra Hewitt from MN, and Kathy Legget from IA have been chosen, respectively. Everyone has been asked to go out to their state chapters and promote these two candidates. Jane asked everyone to think of possible candidates for the opening seat of Victim Advocacy, and to send in biographies ASAP. Jane stressed that it would be great to have strong Midwest representation on the NCA Board.
- Kim reported that the salary survey of Full/Accredited member CAC’s is complete and she had a good response rate. Kim will be mailing out the results once we know if MRCAC receives continued funding, and will post it on our website as well in August. Kim also requested ideas/suggestions for Education and All Site call topics for NCA n.e.t. in 2006. Kim reminded everyone that CEU’s are given out for Education call for law enforcement, legal, medical and social work. All Site calls do not qualify for CEU’s.
State Updates:
Indiana: Jan reported that DCFS has reorganized into two departments: Dept. of Families and Dept. of Children. The Director in the newly formed Dept. of Children is very supportive of CAC’s, and Jan said they hope this will be a potential funding pot in support of CAC’s.
Minnesota: Patty reported that they had their state chapter retreat and invited Ad Hoc members to join them and share information. Some of the members present are those who fund the chapter. One member in attendance representing the Department of Public Safety, said the department is creating a strategic plan geared toward the next five years which would include monies geared toward Child Advocacy Centers in MN.
Iowa: Sue reported that $1 million dollars was awarded to the four CAC’s in the state from the State Legislature. It will be divided up equally between the four centers, each being awarded $250,000 to sustain their centers and services. They are also waiting for an RFP to come from the Department of Human Services that would offer them additional funds as well.
Michigan: Darcy reported that they continue to work with their state Medical Advisory Board in their efforts to find medical experts statewide in order to create additional CAC’s and coverage across the state. In August, the state chapter will sponsor MDT training in Holland, MI, which is being offered to people statewide. They received a VOCA grant to help offset the cost of this training, and the facilitator is Mike Johnson.
North Dakota: Paula stated that they are working on a satellite clinic and their next planning meeting is to be held 07/07/05. The chapter is also currently planning MDT training in January of 2006, co-sponsored by APRI.
Ohio: Ben reported that ONCAC has moved into a new location and is pleased with the new surroundings. Ben also stated that the chapter monies received from the state Children’s Justice Act has been renewed for the next two years. Ohio currently has two counties developing new CAC’s.
South Dakota: Monica reported that representatives from 2 of their 3 state CAC’s attended Leadership in June and everyone enjoyed it. Monica also stated that they are in the process of establishing a relationship with a developing CAC in Pierre, SD.
Respectfully Submitted,
Anne Cherek, BSW
