Advisory Board Call October 17, 2006

Meeting Minutes

Present: Ben Murray, Brenda Nelson, Kathy Pomahac, Mark Zimmerer, Jan Lutz, Barb Small, Kathleen Inwood, Tom Frost, Jane Braun, Kim Martinez, Anne Cherek

Agenda:

Jane updated everyone on the NCA BOD meeting that took place in Memphis, TN October 5-7, 2006:

- Books for the Board nominations are coming out next week. There are 3 people competing for the medical position, the mental health and 5 people for the At Large position. Jane stressed for everyone to get their states to vote, especially for the medical position as the medical standard will be in review in the near future and a qualified member will be critical.

- Each state is to send 3 stuffed bears representing 3 CACs with name of CAC, city and state and number of kids served a year. Bears should be no bigger than 10-12 inches in height. The collection will become part of a celebrity gift bag at the Picabo Street Ski event this winter. Send bears to the Regional office.

Kim reported that the fall newsletter is being posted on the website, as well as the 2007 NCA n.e.t. calendar and Education call topics.

State Updates:

Illinois: Kathy reported that they had their director’s retreat last week. They amended the CAC health insurance act so that CAC employees can have an insurance package. They are also working on an additional insurance package as well to be beneficial to the CAC’s. The have a NCA standards training coming up where they will spend 3 hrs once a month to work on one standard for as many months as it takes. Illinois will also be having Cultural Diversity training and Finding Words.

Minnesota: Tom reported that a state chapter meeting was held September 14th, and the next one will be the end of October and will meet with Dept. of Public Health and will hold a retreat in December.

Ohio: Ben reported that in September, Cathy Crabtree came and facilitated Board training and are moving into Strategic Planning. The first Wednesday of the month they had another training for new board elections. This week they are having their annual membership meeting. Linda Cordisco Steele will be coming to Ohio to facilitate training as well. Ohio has 3 new accredited members and 2 new associate members.

Wisconsin: Brenda reported that the last chapter meeting was held in September and by-laws were passed. They are currently working on legislative initiatives. WI is using grant $ for a state- wide training and summit next month.

Nebraska: Mark reported that they held their state- wide training and alliance meeting in Kearney recently. The chapter would like to hire an alliance training coordinator. The chapter has $180,000 to spend on training for MDT members, state-wide. The goal is to have this position filled in early 2007. The chapter is utilizing $375,000 from the state to provide child advocacy training. The chapter will pursue the state government for $750,000 this year. The next meeting/retreat will be held in Lincoln. The chapter also has several pilot-programs in development stages.

Indiana: Jan reported that the chapter will use grant $ for Cultural Diversity training in December. A new center opened in Jasper County and 4 more that are developing across the state.

Kansas: Kathleen reported that their chapter is working on state funding. Kathleen is meeting with the governor’s office this week; a lobbyist is also attending. The chapter is asking for $2.5 million for CAC’s. Their next chapter meeting is this week and funds distribution will be discussed. A chapter coordinator will be hired if the state funds are allotted.

Iowa: Barb reported that the chapter is meeting with DHS in the near future. The state would like to hire a chapter coordinator as well.
