About the Minnesota Center

The sudden unexpected death of an infant can be devastating for families and challenging for health professionals. The Center is available for information, guidance and support whether the death is due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) or another cause of sudden unexpected death.

We offer support to everyone experiencing a SIDS or other sudden unexpected infant death. We provide counseling, educational programs, and information. The Center also directs a statewide information and counseling network so local resources are better equipped to serve families.

Our goals

  • Identify sudden, unexpected infant deaths in Minnesota.
  • Reach out with information and support to families.
  • Educate professionals and the public about SIDS and other causes of infant death.
  • Participate in SIDS research.
  • Promote risk reduction initiatives.

Services include:

  • Support groups
  • Contact with other parents, grandparents and child care providers affected by sudden, unexpected infant death
  • Referral to trained public health nurses
  • Counseling
  • Physician consultation
  • Quarterly newsletter
  • Education programs and materials

The Minnesota SID Center is a public/private partnership between the Minnesota Department of Health and Children’s Hospitals and Clinics. MNSID is funded in part by these organizations and by donations.

Concerned community members, family physicians, funeral directors, nurses, and friends are encouraged to refer individuals and families to the Center.
