Services
- Staffed 24 hours by board-eligible or board-certified pediatric emergency physicians and by nurses with specialized education in pediatric and emergency medicine.
- Short stay area for short-term assessment, observation, or stabilization (see Short Stay).
- Coordination with pediatric and neonatal critical care transport teams with access to emergency ambulance, helicopter, and airplane services.
- Collaborative assault and abuse services with Midwest Children’s Resource Center include examinations, assessments, interventions, and follow-up care for children who are abused sexually, physically, or emotionally or who are neglected.
- 24-hour access to pediatric specialists, including pediatric surgery.
- Emergency telephone consultation and referral.
- Child-friendly suture program for laceration repair.
- Staff are instructors in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and offer presentations and seminars on diagnosis and management of pediatric emergencies. EMSC
- Pediatric emergency medicine fellowship training program for board-certified pediatricians who want to become board-certified in pediatric emergency medicine.
- Child life staff, trained in child development, help children prepare for procedures and deal with anxiety. Relaxation and mental imagery techniques are used to help control pain.
- Children’s emergency department is one of the largest in the region and families consistently report a positive experience.
