Pulmonary Diagnostics (Special Diagnostic Lab)—St. Paul

This specialized department provides attended diagnostic testing services relating to the control of respiration, sleep staging, and esophageal pH recordings. Currently, Children's Hospitals and Clinics—St. Paul has the only diagnostic sleep lab in the upper mid-west dedicated solely to the care of the pediatric population. Patients range in age from pre-term infants to young adults with special needs.

The sleep lab is nationally accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. There are less than 10 fully accredited pediatric sleep laboratories in the United States.

The Special Diagnostic Sleep Lab is a two-bed lab with a staffing ratio of 1.5 to 2 cardiopulmonary technologists.

The Special Diagnostic Sleep Lab performs the following services:

  • Polysomnography (PSG)
  • Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)
  • Multi-channel Respiratory Sleep Studies
  • CPAP and BiPAP Titrations
  • Esophageal pH recordings
  • Oxygen Evaluations
  • 4 and 5 Channel 12-24 Hour Pneumograms
  • 2 and 3 Channel Documented Event Monitor Recordings
  • Oxygen Saturation Studies
  • Pre-term Car Seat Evaluations
  • Newborn Hearing Screening

We Specialize in Treating Children

The Special Diagnostic Lab specializes in working with pre-term infants, newborns, children, adolescents, and young adults with special needs. Although this diagnostic testing has been attempted in adult labs, the testing has met with very limited success.

However, in our pediatric-oriented lab with pediatric-oriented technicians, testing can be performed easily and safely in children of any age. When approached correctly, nearly all infants, toddlers, pre-schoolers, and older children can tolerate diagnostic testing without problems. A child’s age should never be a reason to forgo testing if it is clinically indicated.

Team of Pediatric Specialists

Patients referred to the Special Diagnostic Lab are cared for by specially trained staff. This staff includes two Board Certified Sleep Disorder Physicians, Pediatric Pulmonologists, Neonatologists, GI Physicians, and 11 Cardiopulmonary Technologists that are Respiratory Care Practitioners with RPSGT credentials.

In addition, patients and their families can access the full range of support services provided by Children’s.

Overnight Housing

For patients having overnight recordings, we currently have a one parent sleep room available within the lab. For the other patient’s parent(s), we attempt to find another sleeping room on Children’s campus.

Overnight accommodations for out-of town extended families are available at tbe Lipschultz Center, in one or two-bedroom apartments that are connected to the hospital by tunnel. This must be pre-arranged prior to the date of the study.
