The DAISY award is a national award that was initiated by the DAISY Foundation in 2000 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 from complications of ITP, an uncommon autoimmune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses inspired this unique way of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families.
Each quarter Children’s honors up to three nurses for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” Families and co-workers are encouraged to nominate nurses who show compassionate care and extraordinary clinical skills with their patients. Nomination forms can be found on the units and on the Nurse Web.
Seventeen nurses at Children’s have been recognized since the program began in April of 2008. To date, the Professional Development Council has received over 70 nominations from families/patients and colleagues. Nurses who are not selected as winners are recognized with a DAISY pin and receive a copy of their nomination. The committee would like to continue to increase the amount of nominations received each year, so please encourage families/patients and staff to nominate nurses who continually show outstanding compassionate care.
