The best way to understand survival and the risk of mortality is the actual to expected mortality ratio. The mortality ratio compares the number of deaths that occur (actual) to the number expected to occur given the illness severity. A ratio of 1.0 means the exact number of deaths occurred as expected.

Children's actual to expected mortality ratio is below 1.0 meaning there are fewer deaths than expected. Children's performs better than most of its peers on this outcome.

This measure uses data from the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS). PHIS is a comprehensive comparative pediatric database of 42 children's hospitals that evaluates clinical and financial details of more than six million patient cases.

This measure is updated quarterly.
