Children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) are critically ill and often require fluids or medications through catheters inserted into large blood vessels (central lines). Central lines are a known risk factor for bloodstream infections. The likelihood of acquiring a blood stream infection is calculated by the number of infections that occur for every 1000 days a central line is present. Children's bloodstream infection rate is lower than the NACHRI (National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions) collaborative average.

This measure uses data from Children’s infection control database. The NACHRI comparison group consists of 26 children's hospitals across the country.

This measure will be updated quarterly.
