Necrotizing enterocolitis

Inflammation of the bowel that results in injury

2007

Necrotizing Enterocolitis is an inflammation of the bowel that occurs in some premature infants. It can cause destruction and loss of part of the intestine, narrowing or blockage of the bowel, and poor nutrition. There are more patients with Necrotizing Enterocolitis in the lower birth weight categories. One or both of Children's hospitals' outcomes are worse than the VON average in three birth weight categories.

This measure uses data from Vermont Oxford Network (VON). VON is a comprehensive comparative database of 632 hospitals that evaluates care and outcomes of 49,000 high-risk (birth weight < 1500 grams) neonates.

This measure is updated annually.
