Severe retinopathy of prematurity

Abnormal blood vessel growth in the eye

2007

Severe Retinopathy of Prematurity occurs when there is abnormal growth and spread of blood vessels in the portion of the eye known as the retina. It can lead to diminished vision and blindness. There are more patients with Severe Retinopathy of Prematurity in the lower birth weight categories and none at all in the top category. Children's outcomes are close to the VON average in all birth weight categories except one.

This measure uses data from Vermont Oxford Network (VON). VON is a comprehensive comparative database of 632 hospitals that evaluates care and outcomes of 49,000 high-risk (birth weight < 1500 grams) neonates.

This measure is updated annually.
