Chronic lung disease

Scarring of the lung

2007

Chronic Lung Disease occurs when there is abnormal development, inflammation, and scarring in the fragile lungs of premature infants. It can lead to ongoing respiratory problems, poor growth and development, and the need for supplemental oxygen. There are more patients with Chronic Lung Disease in the lower birth weight categories. Children's outcomes are better than or close to the VON average in all birth weight categories except one.

This measure uses data from Vermont Oxford Network (VON). VON is a comprehensive comparative database of 632 hospitals that evaluates care and outcomes of 49,000 high-risk (birth weight < 1500 grams) neonates.

This measure is updated annually.
