Nursing Professional Development

Children’s supports the professional development of nurses through a number of facets, including continuing nursing education (CNE), tuition reimbursement, nursing certification reimbursement, and scholarship opportunities for research, education, and conferences. Children’s also offers an on-site bachelor’s completion program at each hospital location in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Learning Opportunities

Basic Life Support (BLS) Classes. To facilitate basic life support (BLS) certification, Children’s provides both the BLS certification and re-certification courses throughout the year.

To prepare for the BLS class, staff members are encouraged to complete the CHEX BLS Review activity and bring the completion certificate to class. As an alternative, staff can check out a BLS book in the Center for Professional Development and Practice or from the staffing offices on each campus. It is no longer required to complete the post test prior to the class.

Funding Assistance

Children’s Tuition Reimbursement Program. To encourage lifelong learning and development, Children’s offers tuition reimbursement for employees meeting basic criteria. The program is designed to offer an annual dollar amount to reimburse employees successfully completing coursework in a related field.

Children’s Nursing Scholarship. In addition to tuition reimbursement, Children’s offers scholarships for nursing education, research and conferences. Eligible employees may apply once per year. The professional development committee reviews applications, and scholarships up to $1500 per person are awarded on a quarterly basis. Funding is provided in part by the professional staff at Children’s.

Certification Bonus. Children’s promotes nursing certification by providing an annual $250 certification bonus for nurses who successfully complete certification in qualified programs. Nurses certified in multiple programs may be eligible for more than one bonus.
