Minnesota Wild Captain Mikko Koivu sponsors private patient rooms at Children’s – St. Paul

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu checks out one of the rooms he sponsored at Children's - St. Paul for the first time.

Today, Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu announced a generous donation to Children’s – St. Paul to sponsor two private patient rooms in the new Neuroscience and Epilepsy Center. The rooms will be decorated with Wild and Koivu memorabilia, photos, posters and collectibles.

The Wild have been long-time supporters of Children’s. Koivu has been a frequent visitor, spending time with patients and families. On a recent tour of Children’s, he wanted to do something to give back and decided to sponsor two private patient rooms.

Unfortunately, rooms on this floor will not be open to families until Children’s receives philanthropic support for all the private patient rooms on this unit. That’s why generous acts like this are so important to Children’s, and why Koivu is asking others in the business community to consider touring the facility to see firsthand the care that is provided.

If you’d like to join Koivu in his spirit of generosity, please consider making a gift to Children’s by contacting Jennifer Peterson at our Foundation by calling 612-813-7075.

Children’s walks for Light the Night

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

On Sunday night, members of Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Team joined around 4,000 walkers at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual Light the Night Walk.

Children’s was a sponsor of this year’s event, and also formed a team to show support. Children’s treats more than 70 percent of Minnesota kids that are diagnosed with cancer, so many of the families at the walk have been or are being cared for at Children’s.

The walk took place at Target Field and was led by Twins Hall of Famer Rod Carew. Each walker carried an illuminated balloon: white balloons for cancer survivors, red balloons for supporters, and gold balloons to remember those who lost their battles with cancer.

In all, the Light the Night Walk raised more than $540,000 to support research into cures for blood cancers.

Cleft and Craniofacial Clinic Family Fun Day

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

On Friday, Children’s Cleft and Craniofacial Clinics hosted a Family Fun Day at the Kiwanis Boy Scout Camp in Marine on St. Croix. The day camp, attended by more than 30 cleft and craniofacial patient families, was an opportunity for campers to participate in activities like a challenge course, climbing wall, archery and canoeing. The campers were able to stretch the boundaries of their everyday activities, build self-esteem and make new friends. A big thank you to the Northern Star Council – Boy Scouts of America for graciously providing their camp for our families for a day, free of charge!

Julia throws the first pitch at a Twins game

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Julia Olejar, 4, one of our cardiovascular patients, got to throw the first pitch at a Twins game Monday night.

One of our cardiovascular patients, 4-year-old Julia Olejar, got to throw out the first pitch at Monday night’s Twins game! Julia’s parents, Kelly and Tim, and little brother, Anthony, watched proudly as she threw the ball to T.C. Bear, the Twins’ mascot.

Julia’s time in the spotlight was part of a check presentation for the HeartBeat 5000, an annual 5K run/walk that has raised nearly $1.5 million for cardiovascular services at Children’s over the last nine years. Before the game, Children’s received a check for $75,000 from the three presenting sponsors of HeartBeat 5000: Boston Scientific, St. Jude Medical Inc. and Medtronic.
