Volunteer Recognition Week Profile: Alissa Karges

April 12th, 2011

Where do you volunteer, and how long have you been volunteering?

I have been an occupational therapy assistant with Kim Lee, OT, in the Developmental Rehabilitation department since July 2009.

What is your educational background and future career interest?

In college, I studied child psychology with a focus on disability services and autism spectrum disorders.  I plan to go into pediatric occupational therapy.  I also hope to train therapy dogs and participate in animal-assisted activities.

What brought you to Children’s as a volunteer?

I love interacting with children and families.  I was also interested in observing the role of an occupational therapist and investigating the field further.

What kinds of things do you enjoy doing when you’re not volunteering?

I enjoy spending time with friends and family, going to Twins games, training my dog & taking her to new parks, and working at a floral studio.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

What isn’t to love?!  The Volunteer Services staff is amazing.  Kim has been a great mentor and has shared a lot of her insight and experiences as an occupational therapist. She is always willing to answer questions and explain the underlying principles behind the activities and strategies. I’m grateful for the opportunity to participate in OT sessions and observe the children work toward their goals each week.
