Bon Voyage, Ben Reed!

A wise man once said, “The only constant is change.”  Our department will experience another big change next week, as we bid farewell to Minneapolis Volunteer Coordinator Ben Reed.

Ben began his career at Children’s in 2004, working in Human Resources.  He came to Volunteer Services in April 2006, and has been a tremendous asset to the department ever since.  We have greatly appreciated his community involvement & leadership skills, and will miss his humor, easygoing nature, and knowledge of all things food-related! :)

Ben will be taking a new position as Manager of the International Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, so we’re very glad that he will remain in the area!  Ben’s last day at Children’s will be Friday, October 7th.  We will be having an open house in the Minneapolis Volunteer Services office from 12:00-2:00 pm that day if you’re able to stop by; otherwise, please feel free to shoot Ben an e-mail ([email protected]) or give him a call (612-813-6170) to thank him for his years of dedicated service to Children’s.

Best of luck in your new venture, Ben!  We’ll miss you!

Welcome, Kristi Kehrwald!

Editor’s Note:  As mentioned on our blog last week, we’re excited to introduce Kristi Kehrwald as the newest member of the Children’s Volunteer Services team!   Below is a brief introduction from Kristi, in her own words!

Kristi Kehrwald

“Hi!  My name is Kristi Kehrwald, and I am very excited to have joined the Volunteer Services team at Children’s Hospital, working as a Volunteer Coordinator on the St. Paul Campus.  It’s been incredible to meet so many amazing volunteers, and to learn about the awesome work that you do here at the hospital!
I attended the University of Minnesota-Morris as an undergraduate, studying Political Science and International Studies.  Following graduation, I completed three years of National Service through AmeriCorps VISTA and NCCC (the National Civilian Community Corps).  These years of service involved work in a wide variety of settings, from a disaster response assignment in Texas to an organic farm in Hawaii to building homes with Habitat for Humanity in the Gulf Coast region.  Most recently, I recruited and led AmeriCorps VISTAs with Habitat for Humanity in Minnesota.  I’ve lived in Minneapolis for a year and continue to love exploring new places, events and areas of the Cities:  feel free to share your favorites with me!
I have really loved working with volunteers over the past several years, and am SO excited to be joining the Children’s Hospital Volunteer Services team!  Thank you to everyone for such a warm welcome already!”

Welcome to Children’s, Kristi!  We’re happy to have you onboard!

Staffing Change: Molly Lamon “Goes Casual!”

Effective last Friday, September 2nd, St. Paul Volunteer Coordinator Molly Lamon has reduced her time to casual.  (This means that Molly will remain a member of our department on an “on-call” basis.)

Molly has been working in Volunteer Services at Children’s since 2005, and has been instrumental in developing, organizing, and championing a variety of amazing volunteer initiatives.  We have particularly benefitted from her passion for our PAWH (Pets Assisting With Healing) and Developmental Rehabilitation programs in St. Paul.   It’s been a joy to work with Molly, and we will miss her friendly, energetic, and outgoing nature in our office on a daily basis!

We’re extremely happy that Molly will not really be leaving us, but simply taking more time to be home with her four beautiful children.  You’ll still have chances to see her around the St. Paul campus, either picking up hours in our office or utilizing her child life certification through coordinating the Diabetes Support Group program.

Thank you for ALL that you have done for our department, and for Children’s, over the past 6 years, Molly.  We will miss you!

P.S.  We’re very excited to welcome our new colleague, Kristi Kehrwald, to the department as a full-time Volunteer Coordinator in St. Paul.  We will be posting a “get-to-know-Kristi” profile on our blog very soon…stay tuned!

New Emergency Department Positions A Success!

UROC Anne Hennessey & volunteer Anfisa Schams.

This summer, Volunteer Services collaborated with the Children’s-St. Paul Emergency Department to pilot a new volunteer position!  Emergency Department volunteers assist in administering TruthPoint (patient/family feedback) surveys, providing sibling support, and supporting the ED staff.   According to Anna Wells, Unit Operations & Registration Coordinator (UROC)  in the Emergency Department,  “It has been extremely helpful to have volunteers around to aide the UROCs and nurses with keeping patients occupied by bringing them toys and helping pass out TruthPoint surveys to keep patient/family satisfaction as high as possible.”

UROC Anna Wells, volunteer Jenna Maslowski, & UROC Katherine Funke.

Thank you, Anna, for your great feedback…and THANK YOU, ED volunteers, for all of your great work!
**If you are interested in volunteering in the Emergency Department in the future, please contact St. Paul Volunteer Services at (651) 220-6141!

Huge thanks to our new volunteers for your positive attitudes, enthusiasm, and energy…and huge thanks to our “veterans” for welcoming these new students with such warmth & compassion!

We’re looking forward to another wonderful summer!

Minneapolis Volunteer Services Is MOVING…

Hear ye, hear ye!  For those who remember the days when Minneapolis Volunteer Services was located in the basement of the hospital…those days have returned!  Our office will be moving BACK into the lower level of the main hospital on Monday, June 20th.

Our new office space will be adjacent to our old location:  when you come out of the hospital elevators on the lower level, you’ll walk straight ahead, take your first left, and be at our office in seconds!

We can’t wait to be back in the hospital again, and look forward to having our office in a more convenient & centralized location!  We’ll continue to keep you all posted through updates and office signage over the next several weeks.

June 20, here we come!
