2014 Volunteer Services Scholarship Winners!

Congratulations to the 2014 Volunteer Services scholarship winners!

This year, six deserving Children’s volunteers won a $1,500 scholarship toward their continuing education.

Each volunteer has put in a minimum of 250 hours of service at Children’s, has completed a scholarship application and essay, and shows up to volunteer each week with incredible drive, determination and a true passion for Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

Congratulations to our winners: Amanda Wanous, Nick Plimpton, Grace Scribner-O’Pray, Sarah Hovseth, Susie Wolter, and Sean Creegan.

We are thrilled to support their educational goals, and look forward to having future doctors, a future nurse and future child psychologists among us.

Volunteers at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota have an incredible work ethic and desire to help others. On Tuesday, May 21, Volunteer Services had the true pleasure of celebrating the dedication and talent of six of these volunteers at our annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony. To be eligible to receive this prestigious award, our volunteers must have a minimum of 250 hours of service, have completed a comprehensive scholarship application (including an essay), and support Children’s mission on a weekly basis through their commitment and excellence. Javier Carchi Silverio, Lorita Chanderpaul, Laura Dahl, Christina Hirsch, Fanny Jimbo & Analise Lotz were this year’s Volunteer Services Scholarship recipients. Our department is proud to support their future career goals by giving them a check towards furthering their academic studies.

As stated by Dr. Alan Goldbloom, President of Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, “Each one of you is a source of pride for Children’s. On behalf of our staff, our patients, and the families we serve, I want to thank you for your volunteer commitment to Children’s, and wish you continued success in the future.”

Courage Center’s EMPOWER Scholarships Now Accepting Applications!

The Courage Center is currently accepting applications for its EMPOWER Scholarships!

EMPOWER Scholarships are open to ethnically diverse students attending an institution of higher learning. Selection is based on the applicant’s intentions, achievements, volunteerism and need. The application deadline is May 15th, 2013.

Last Thursday, May 10th, Volunteer Services had the honor and pleasure of celebrating the talent and hard work of six of our volunteers at our annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony. To be eligible for a scholarship, volunteers must have a minimum of 250 hours of service, complete a comprehensive scholarship application, and support Children’s mission through their commitment and excellence.  Danielle Honnette, Hai Nguyen-Tran, Anvita Singh, VaShondra Harris, Amanda Monn, & Laura Ruiz-Colon were the 2012 Volunteer Services Scholarship recipients. Our department is proud to support their future career goals by giving each volunteer a check for $1,000 towards furthering their academic studies.  We were fortunate to have President and CEO Dr. Alan Goldbloom, Vice President of Human Resources Dave Brumbaugh, and our own Director of Volunteer Services Sandy Bergeron speak on behalf of the organization, thanking the volunteers for their time and praising them for their efforts and care that they have given patients and families. In addition, physical therapists Lynn Tanner &  Katherine (Ites) Wacker joined us, sharing the positive impact that their volunteer had on the Rehab Department.

2012 Volunteer Services Scholarship: Now Accepting Applications!

Children’s Hospital is so thrilled to have an amazing group of student volunteers from local high schools and colleges!

To support the educational aspirations of our student volunteers, Volunteer  Services awards a limited number of scholarships on an annual basis. To be eligible to apply for a scholarship,  volunteers must meet the following qualifications:

  1. Applicants must be currently active in the Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota volunteer program, with a minimum of 250 hours of volunteer service (25 of which must be from the current academic year) by the application deadline.
  2. Must be at least a senior in high school.  College and post-baccalaureate students are also welcome to apply.
  3. Must have been accepted at an institution of higher learning (college, university, graduate, vocational/technical institute).  Applicant need not be pursuing a medical career.

Do you meet our scholarship criteria? If you’re interested in applying, get in touch! Volunteer Coordinators on either campus can provide you with scholarship information and an application form. Completed applications are due to the Volunteer Services office by Friday, April 13th, 2012.

Nominations Open for Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program

Nominations are now being accepted for the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program, which recognizes community youth volunteers between ages 6-18. According to their website, Kohl’s will be awarding over $440,000 in scholarships and prizes to more than 2,200 young people this year. Nominations will be accepted until March 15th, 2012.

This annual award recognizes youth who have served their community in the past year as a volunteer. Winners will be announced at the store, regional and national level. Volunteers who are selected for the award may receive Kohl’s gift cards, recognition certificates and store posters, a monetary award to be given to a nonprofit of the volunteer’s choosing, and/or scholarships to go towards college education. Winners are chosen based on their volunteer service and the community benefit from their service.

EMPOWER Scholarship Opportunity!

Going into a rehabilitation/health care career & looking for extra dollars to finance your education?  We encourage you to apply for this year’s EMPOWER (Encourage Minority Participation in Occupations with Emphasis on Rehabilitation) Scholarship, sponsored by the Courage Center.  Recipients of this scholarship will receive $1500.00 toward their higher education in health care. 

Scholarship Criteria:

  • Applicants must be ethnically diverse students accepted to or enrolled in a higher learning institution.
  • Applicants must be a Minnesota or western Wisconsin (St. Croix, Pierce, Polk, or Burnett counties) resident.
  • Volunteer involvement in the community is required.  Applicants must have demonstrated interest in a medical or rehabilitation field by having volunteer involvement in a health care environment.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required.

  • Applicants should also demonstrate financial need.
