New hospitalist medical director named

Emily Chapman, MD, has been selected as the new medical director of our Hospital Medicine Program starting in June. She brings to this role a great portfolio of management experience, phenomenal clinical skills, and a strong foundation within our pediatric community.  She will assume responsibility for the Hospital Medicine Program not only as it exists at Children's - Minneapolis but also as it develops on the St Paul campus.

RetCam Retinal Imaging used to identify patients at risk for ROP

Using RetCam digital imaging technology, Children’s has implemented a screening process for premature babies at risk for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).Each week, neonatal nurse ROP coordinators at the Minneapolis and St. Paul NICUs identify babies who meet ROP screening criteria.

Changes to Vascular Access Clinical Standards

Changes to Vascular Access Clinical StandardsVascular Access Clinical Standards have been updated to reflect 2011 CDC guidelines; effective March 2012. In an effort to standardize central vascular device care between the neonatal and pediatric communities, patient care types, and care locations, the standards were revised to reflect current evidence based cares in intravenous therapy, infection prevention, and skin integrity maintenance. The updated five clinical standards include: Care of the non-tunneled vascular device, Care of the tunneled vascular device: Hickman and Broviac catheters, Implanted port care, Pediatric PICC lines, and Peripheral IV insertion.

Children’s sports medicine program addresses unique needs of young athletes

Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota provides comprehensive care for young athletes up to 18 years of age, with sports medicine clinics in its Minneapolis and St. Paul locations. The program’s staff includes Jamie Engels, MD, who is fellowship trained in both sports medicine and pediatric orthopedics. Its physical therapists have an emphasis in sports medicine and special training in the care of children.
