Generosity in action

From moms and dads, to nurses in training, to kids down the street – it takes a lot of people with a lot of heart to make a place as special as Children's. Here's a snapshot of the many ways that people are helping to make Children's, Children's.

Legacy of giving

As a long-time nurse, Jeanne Wyatt has always appreciated the dedication of doctors, nurses and other medical team members. That appreciation grew even deeper when the Children's cardiovascular staff saved her young grandson, Gabe. Jeanne wanted to continue this good work, so she established an endowed fund that will assist cardiovascular patients, families and medical staff for years to come.

Committed through leadership
Shannon Evenstad had no idea that her son's trip to Children's emergency department would be the start of a long-term relationship with the hospital. Deeply impacted by the care he received in the intensive care unit, Shannon became a committed volunteer on the Children's Foundation board and The Mother Baby Center task force. She and her husband, Mark, have also sponsored rooms and artwork in The Mother Baby Center. Their unexpected connection with Children's turned into an unbelievable legacy.

It's never too early to support your favorite cause. Just ask Kole Bruchmann. He's only 8 years old and already has made a significant contribution to Children's. For his most recent birthday, Kole asked family and friends for donations to "help kids with cancer" instead of gifts for himself. By helping our patients, Kole also taught his family and friends an important lesson: Everyone can make a difference.

employees raised calloutOur staff has our back
Children’s staff members give back daily through their compassionate care, and many go a step further by giving beyond their hours on the job. One shining example is our surgery and anesthesia team which hosted a mini-golf event on their unit to raise money for our employee giving campaign. All together, our employees raised $456,597 in 2012. This kind of dedication only comes from people who love what they do and
where they do it.

Generosity on every level
If you try to put a value on the countless hours of time that Children's generous volunteers offer every year it would look like this: PRICELESS. Vince Opheim a former patient, current volunteer and aspiring nurse, has donated more than 1,300 hours of his time entertaining kids, training new volunteers and serving as our mascot, Twinkle. It's people like Vince who remind us that some of the most valuable contributions have no dollar sign at all.

Business with heart

Businesses around the Twin Cities support Children's in countless ways. One local company, M&M Mortgage, lent a hand by donating to our Fill A Room With Care campaign. Their generosity provides private patient rooms in The Mother Baby Center and neonatal intensive care unit with the little extras that make a big difference to a growing family. It helps our patients feel more at home, and helps M&M Mortgage see the personal impact they have on so many families who enter through our doors.
