General Questions on Tribute Giving

What is a tribute gift?

A tribute gift is any gift that acknowledges a person, event or milestone. Many times, tribute gifts are given to honor or remember a loved one, to thank a care giver, or to celebrate a special occasion or event.

Who gives tribute gifts?

Lots of people! Tribute gifts are often given by patient families and also by the extended network of friends and family engaged in the life-changing health care experience of Children's patients and their families.

How are tribute gifts recognized?

All tribute gifts are recognized with a personal acknowledgement letter and receipt from Children’s Foundation. Additionally, if desired, Children’s Foundation will gladly send a personalized announcement card to the person for whom the gift is made or the family of the person being remembered.

Supporters who give tribute gift(s) cumulatively totaling $1,000 or more in a calendar year will be listed on Children’s Annual Giving Donor Wall at both hospital campuses. Tribute gifts totaling $1,000 or more are also eligible to be recognized on Children’s Dedicated to Our Stars display. To learn more about this special display, click here

When I make a tribute gift, where does the money go?

All donors have the opportunity to designate their donation to the area of their choice. If you would like a representative from Children's Foundation to help you determine a designation, please contact the Foundation at 651-855-2800.

Will Children's Foundation notify the person for whom I am making a tribute gift?

About the Tribute Walls

How do I locate the tribute walls?

Children’s – Minneapolis: The “Dedicated to Our Stars” display at Children’s – Minneapolis is located on the second floor, just outside of the entrance to the Sibling Play Area.

Children’s – St. Paul: The “Dedicated to Our Stars” display at Children’s – St. Paul is currently being redesigned. It is anticipated that the new display will be installed in the spring of 2012. The new display will be located on first floor of the hospital, in the corridor near Children’s main elevators (also the corridor that leads to United Hospital).

Who designed the tribute walls?

Both of Children’s “Dedicated to Our Stars” tribute displays were created by artist Dan Mackerman of St. Paul, Minnesota. Dan has worked as a full-time artist since 1988 and works in both 2-D and 3-D art, painting oils, publishing giclées and sculpting in mixed media. Much of Dan’s commissioned public artwork has focused on healing arts programs for local health care organizations. Given his background in this area, Children’s commissioned him to create the artwork accompanying our special tribute displays

In addition to designing both tribute walls at Children’s campuses, Dan has provided Children’s with stunning sculptures and paintings through his involvement in Children’s Arts and Healing and Urban Renewal Program. At Children’s – Minneapolis, Dan’s work can be found in paintings and sculptures on the first floor of the hospital as well as on the second floor of the Children’s Specialty Center. At Children’s – St. Paul, Dan will be creating a custom mural to be displayed in the fifth floor of the new Sky Pavilion, once construction is complete.

Outside of his work at Children’s, Dan Mackerman has received commissions from a diverse list of clients, including Disney, Animal Planet Television Network and Paisley Park Studios. His accomplished career also includes vast experience as an art instructor, having taught at the University of Minnesota, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Minnesota Museum of American Art and the Lulea Tekniska Universitet in Skelleftea, Sweden. Dan Mackerman holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Minnesota.

What is Children's Healing Environment?

At Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, we strive to foster inspirational healing journeys by providing patients and their families access to the arts and arts community. By integrating art with architecture, landscape, and medicine, we hope to create a more healing environment throughout the hospital while simultaneously providing pathways that can help children and families relax, process, ask questions and assign meaning to their personal experiences.
