Children’s sports medicine program addresses unique needs of young athletes
Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota provides comprehensive care for young athletes up to 18 years of age, with sports medicine clinics in its Minneapolis and St. Paul locations. The program’s staff includes Jamie Engels, MD, who is fellowship trained in both sports medicine and pediatric orthopedics. Its physical therapists have an emphasis in sports medicine and special training in the care of children.
The staff develops individualized programs for patients aimed at helping them recover from their injuries and safely return to play. Integral to those recovery programs is an understanding of the unique circumstances faced by these young athletes, who may be not only returning to an active lifestyle but addressing growth-related concerns as well.
Children’s sports medicine program treats acute and chronic injuries to the upper and lower extremities as well as many other conditions and injuries related to overuse or chronic disease in young athletes. Once they return to play, Children’s also provides and implements injury-prevention programs.
