Lymphedema therapist now on staff
Cheryl Hansen, a 25-year employee with Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, recently completed her certification to become a lymphedema therapist, making her the only one at Children’s and one of only a few in the state.
Lymphedema is a condition where the tissue swells and fluid is retained caused by a compromised lymphatic system. This condition can be genetic, acquired through cancer treatment and trauma or caused by some medications.
Cheryl’s intense training at Abbott Northwestern Hospital included 45 hours of online tutorials and nine days of workshops and lessons.
Hansen said education is a big component in the treatment of the condition. There are many things that children and adults can learn to help manage the symptoms at home.
