Emergency Department

At Children’s, we care for more pediatric emergency and trauma patients than any other health care system in our region, seeing about 90,000 kids each year.  Our team is the largest and most experienced in treating childhood injuries and acute illness.  Children’s emergency departments offer 24-hour access to more than 40 board-eligible or board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physicians.  Add to that more than 100 nurses, technicians, and other medical staff all specially trained in pediatrics and dedicated to providing the highest quality of care in a child-focused environment.  ED staff provides triage and stabilization for all patients that enter the ED.  As experts and leaders in pediatric emergency medicine, comprehensive care is delivered to children and their families in times of need.  Emergency care is coordinated with access to emergency ambulance, helicopter, and airplane services by physicians, pediatric intensivists, and emergency surgery and transport teams. Our UnitedHealth Care Pediatric Emergency Department and Level I Trauma Center is in Minneapolis and our Peter J. King Pediatric Emergency Department and Level III trauma center is in St. Paul.

The ED staff has expertise in management of medical and surgical emergencies, pain management, sedation, patient/family teaching, laceration repair, initial evaluation and treatment of direct admissions to the hospital, teaching service, and referrals.  The staff and facilities are equipped to handle multiple and diverse types of pediatric acute illness or injury.  Physicians are available by telephone as a resource to aid in managing full arrests or critically ill children in outlying areas.
