Glossary of Terms

Epidural
Usually refers to the epidural space. This is the space just outside of the dura, the outermost covering of the spinal cord. An anesthetic, such as bupivacaine, is injected into this space to numb the tissues. This type of anesthesia is called regional anesthesia since it numbs only a region of the body. This allows you to be pain free but still awake.

This is Children's Glossary of Medical Terms - and much more. You'll find the basic definitions and, for many medical subjects, a larger medical context written by an experienced Children's pediatrician. All the definitions are in an easy-to-print format.
