Recurrent ear infections

Why does my child need ear tubes?

Ear tubes are recommended for children who either get lots of ear infections or have fluid behind the eardrum that doesn’t go away. Both of these problems are most common between the ages of 6 months and 3 years, although older children sometimes have these problems too.

How do ear tubes work?

During an ear infection, fluid builds up behind the eardrum in a place called the middle ear space. Normally, when the ear infection has run its course the fluid drains out of the middle ear into the back of the nose through the body's natural drainage tube called the Eustachian tube (yoo-STAY-shun).

Sometimes this fluid doesn't go away because the Eustachian tube remains swollen and can't open. Fluid trapped behind the eardrum causes a hearing loss because it prevents the eardrum from vibrating normally.

Ear tubes are small plastic or metal tubes that are surgically inserted into the eardrum (also called the tympanic membrane).

Ear tubes also allow air to get into the middle ear. Just like the big bubbles in the water tank on top of a water cooler, air needs to get into the middle ear in order for the fluid to drain out. Over time this "ventilation" helps to decrease swelling in the Eustachian tube and allows it to function normally again. This is why ear tubes are sometimes called ventilation tubes or pressure equalization tubes (PE tubes for short).

Otolaryngology, also known at ENT (ears, nose and throat) specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the head and neck. It also includes plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face and neck. ENT issues usually need to be addressed during childhood so choosing a pediatric-trained ENT specialist is important.

When it comes to your child, you want the most experienced specialists taking charge. Children's ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery is the only program in Minnesota that exclusively focuses on pediatrics. Our team of physicians has extensive training to care for the simple to the complex problems affecting the ears, nose and throat in infants, children and adolescents.

Children's is the only hospital in Minnesota to offer 24/7 access to a pediatric ENT specialist and our staff delivers every aspect of care with the unique needs of children and their families in mind.

surgery

While many diseases and disorders of the ears, nose and throat can be treated effectively with medications or other therapies, adequate treatment of some problems may require surgery. Often surgery will be recommended or discussed as a possible option only after medicines or other treatments have failed.

All of the physicians at Children's ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery program are fully trained pediatric ear, nose, throat and facial plastic surgeons who specialize in the treatment of infants, children and adolescents.

Children's surgical services perform more than 20,000 surgeries each year on fetuses, newborns, children, adolescents, and young adults from throughout the Upper Midwest.

Surgical treatment results rank Children's among the top hospitals in the U.S. in pediatric surgical care. Children's has some of the lowest rates in the U.S. of post-surgery complications and some of the highest rates of patient and family satisfaction.

If one of our doctors has recommended surgery for your child, our staff will work with you to provide information about the procedure and answer your questions.  Eating and drinking guidelines prior to surgery.

Children's ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery program provides care in a state-of-the-art facility at our hospitals in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

As with all programs at Children's, the ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery program understands the unique needs of children and their families and works to uphold Children's commitment to patient- and family-centered care.

Children's radiologists use low-dose radiation protocols for tests such as CT scans to limit risks to patients. Nurses and laboratory technicians call upon their extensive experience working children to help put patients at ease during blood work or other stressful procedures.

And because many of our patients have complex medical conditions, we work closely with families to facilitate access to Children's many leading physicians in other specialities, including audiology, genetics, hematology/oncology and cardiology. All care is provided with direct access to patients' electronic medical record.

Such close coordination is not only more convenient for patients and their families, it fosters better and more comprehensive care.

Eating Disorders

EatingDisorder

The Center for the Treatment of Eating Disorders provides evidence-based treatment interventions for eating disorders with an emphasis on collaboration with families and referring providers.

Children’s is the only hospital-based eating disorders program in the Twin Cities to offer immediate access for medical stabilization.

Early diagnosis of eating disorders and intervention significantly improves outcomes. Children’s inpatient programs and outpatient programs are family-centered and specifically tailored for children, adolescents and adults. After a comprehensive evaluation, our treatment team works collaboratively to customize your treatment plan. If you have medical complications you may require inpatient treatment. If you are medically stable, we will work to help you make changes as an outpatient using individual, group, and family therapy. A new program in collaboration with Abbott Northwestern Hospital provides care to adult patients.

alert

Flu season is here and in full force. Flu activity started earlier and with more severity than in recent years. At Children's, we have restricted our
visitor policy to ensure our patients are safe from the flu.

And we are asking for your help. There are many ways to help keep you and your family healthy and safe. Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a serious respiratory illness. Symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, congestion, a runny nose, and, in extreme cases, death.

It's not too late to get vaccinated! Click here to locate a flu vaccine clinic in your area.

For more information about influenza, tips for prevention and videos to help teach your kids,
check out the Resources tab below.

If you have additional questions about the flu, please contact Children's Flu Prevention
team at 651-220-5555.

Children's has teamed up with Kohl's Cares, a division of Kohl's department stores, to make flu prevention and education simple for families. Since 2009, Kohl's Cares has awarded grants to Children's to fund the Kohl's Cares and Children's Flu Prevention Project. The project offers flu vaccine clinics and educational assemblies around the Twin Cities to teach children about flu prevention.

Learn more about our partnership with Kohl's Cares.

Please contact the Children's Flu Prevention team at 651-220-5555 if you are interested in the following:

  • Hosting a flu vaccine clinic at your school
  • Having a Children's representative speak to your students about influenza and flu prevention
  • Using materials listed under Resources for your flu prevention activities
  • Any other questions related to the flu, flu prevention, or the Kohl's Cares and Children's Flu Prevention Project

Flu Prevention Tips

Families should follow these simple tips to keep kids healthy throughout flu season:

  • Get vaccinated against influenza
  • Wash your hands
  • Cover your cough and sneeze
  • Stay home from work, school or childcare when sick

The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated. The flu vaccine is 70 to 90 percent effective in preventing influenza. Children’s encourages everyone 6 months of age and older to get vaccinated against influenza. Contact your primary clinic to schedule an appointment for a flu vaccine.

There are two types of flu vaccines:

  • Injectible vaccine (flu shot)
  • Nasal Spray (FluMist™)

The following links provide more information about the flu, why it’s important for you and your child to get vaccinated, handwashing tips and more.
