Children’s investigators quantify high levels of radiation exposure
A study led by Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota’s Anupam Kharbanda, MD, shows that children receiving computed tomography (CT) scans often received significant doses of radiation.
Dr. Kharbanda, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Children’s, was the lead author on “Analysis of Radiation Exposure Among Pediatric Trauma Patients at National Trauma Centers.” The study, which used a database of children receiving treatment for traumatic injuries at trauma centers across the United States, is published in the Journal of Trauma, March 2013.
Background
CT scans have become a mainstay of initial evaluation for both pediatric and adult patients who have experienced trauma – one of the most frequent emergency department complaints.
Approaching the issue from the perspective that children are not simply small adults, Dr. Kharbanda and his team sought to investigate the effects of radiation exposure on pediatric patients. Children are more sensitive than adult patients to the effects of ionizing radiation but few studies have described the radiation exposure to pediatric patients during these evaluations.

Children’s Clinical Research Investigators
The clinical investigators at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota are recognized nationally and internationally for their excellent care and outcomes. Their research efforts contribute to this excellence and ensure future improvements in care delivery and outcomes.
Our investigators engage in a wide range of research activities. They develop and implement their own projects, collaborate with investigators at other hospitals and universities, participate in registries and clinical trial networks, and consult as experts. Partnerships with entities such as the Therapeutic Development Network of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Children’s Oncology Group, and the Pediatric Heart Network enable clinical research centers worldwide to consolidate research efforts and provide patients with leading edge treatments.

Education and Training
To promote integrity and responsibility in research, RSP maintains several courses regarding research education and project management. These courses are available to any staff currently engaged in or interested in research.
Offered Courses
- Protection of Human Subjects Training*
- Financial Conflicts of Interest (FCOI) Training*
- Grants 101 Training
- Research Seminar Series
*Prior to engaging in any research activity at Children’s, all investigators and study personnel (research assistants, coordinators, etc) are required to complete both “Protection of human subjects” and “Financial conflict of interest” courses.
Protection of Human Subjects Training
Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Biomedical Investigator, Basic Course
This course satisfies the NIH human subjects training requirement for obtaining Federal funds.
The training may be accessed at: www.citiprogram.org. Follow these steps:
1. Create a user name and password
2. Select Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota as the participating institution
3. Select the course for biomedical investigators
4. Upon successful completion, print and save the certificate
Refresher training must be completed every two years.
Also, complete the CITI Human Subjects Training for another Institution
Please contact Debra McKeehen, Institutional Review Board administrator, at 651-220-5818 with any questions regarding human subjects training.
Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) Training
FCOI training must be completed by any person, regardless of title or position, who is responsible for the design, conduct, or reporting of research.
The training may be accessed at: www.citiprogram.org
