Children’s of Minnesota and TV personality and chef Andrew Zimmern team up to inspire healthy eating for kids

Minneapolis, Minn. – (Feb. 19, 2013) – Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota and Andrew Zimmern are teaming up to promote healthy eating and living for kids in the local community. Together, they will introduce healthy, kid-friendly recipes developed by Andrew and reviewed by Children’s dieticians on the Kids’ Health Blog twice a month and collaborate on various healthy food initiatives aimed at the communities surrounding Children’s two hospitals.

This exciting partnership was inspired out of a shared interest to curb childhood obesity, which has, unfortunately, reached even the youngest children in the community. In Minnesota, one in four kids is obese or overweight and one in five kids are obese before entering kindergarten. The problem is even greater among poor and minority children regardless of family income. Additional findings on the state of pediatric obesity in Minnesota, and accompanying infographic, can be found in a 2012 white paper released by Children’s.

“Establishing good, healthy habits at a very early age can help thwart obesity; habits including a healthy diet, frequent exercise and limited screen time,” said Julie Boman, MD, pediatrician at Children’s.  “Children’s partnership with Andrew is a fun and exciting way for kids and families to combine creative cooking with healthy foods, in hopes that families can work together to stay healthy.”

One goal of the partnership is to make healthy eating a fun habit for families. Andrew’s recipes will be simple enough that kids can help prepare meals and learn about cooking and delicious enough for the entire family to enjoy.  

"Getting kids involved in conversations about nutrition at an early age is essential in shaping a robust, healthy food life,” said Zimmern. “From grocery shopping to mashing avocados for guacamole, my wife and I include our 8-year-old son in our meal planning. Giving him some ownership in the process has transformed the way he thinks about food. This partnership with Children’s aims to do the same for kids and families in Minnesota."

   •  Later this year, Zimmern will host a live, interactive show in Children’s very own Star Studio, visit
      patients and sign his new kids’ book,
      “Andrew Zimmern’s Guide to Exceptionally Weird, Wild, & Wonderful Foods.”
   •  During Childhood Obesity Awareness Month in September, Zimmern and Children’s will co-host an
      hour-long chat on obesity.
