Emergency Department

With one of the busiest pediatric emergency programs in the nation and almost 90,000 pediatric emergency room visits last year, you can trust that we've treated just about everything.

Catering exclusively to the needs of children, Children’s emergency department offers 24-hour access to board-eligible or board-certified pediatric emergency physicians and to nurses with specialized education in pediatric and emergency. More than 40 pediatric and emergency medicine physicians provide coverage on the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses – the largest pediatric-trained emergency staff in the region.

Our Child Life staff help children prepare for and deal with anxiety about procedures and teach relaxation and mental imagery techniques to help control pain.

Children’s also collaborates with Midwest Children’s Resource Center for assault and abuse services including examinations, assessments, interventions, and follow-up care for children who are neglected or abused sexually, physically, or emotionally.

UnitedHealthcare Pediatric Emergency Department - Minneapolis

Children’s newly expanded emergency department is designed to reduce wait times and streamline care at the seventh busiest pediatric emergency department in the country and the only trauma center in Minnesota that caters exclusively to the needs of Children.

Twenty-six treatment rooms, a new triage system that speeds diagnosis, and a new, more efficient layout of the emergency department help staff deliver faster, more efficient care.

Additional highlights of this Level III trauma center include:

• 26 treatment rooms increase capacity of care
• New triage system enables faster diagnosis
• Large, comfortable waiting room provides privacy and decreases stress
• Covered short-term parking and separate ER entrance improves ease of access
• Separate and enclosed climate-controlled ambulance bay protects patients from the elements, offers space for multiple rigs and workspace for EMS providers
• Resuscitation and ortho procedure rooms are located just inside the bay doors for quicker response
• New, more efficient layout helps staff deliver faster care

Children's has one of the busiest pediatric emergency programs in the country. Given the high volume of patients and the importance of emergency and trauma care, renovating and expanding our emergency department was a critical piece of Phase I construction in St. Paul.

The new emergency room will offer more space with larger private rooms for patients and families’ comfort, enhanced infection control, and a more effective design to help improve efficiency and reduce wait times.

Our goal is to create the best experience for patients and families when they need it most.

Located on the first floor, the new emergency department features:

• Updated trauma rooms
• New and expanded triage area
• New welcome area and check-in desk

Services

• Staffed 24 hours by board-eligible or board-certified pediatric emergency physicians and by nurses with specialized education in pediatric and emergency medicine.
• Short stay area for short-term assessment, observation, or stabilization (see Short Stay).
• Coordination with pediatric and neonatal critical care transport teams with access to emergency ambulance, helicopter, and airplane services.

• Collaborative assault and abuse services with Midwest Children’s Resource Center include examinations, assessments, interventions, and follow-up care for children who are abused sexually, physically, or emotionally or who are neglected.
• 24-hour access to pediatric specialists, including pediatric surgery.
• Emergency telephone consultation and referral.
• Child-friendly suture program for laceration repair.
• Staff are instructors in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and offer presentations and seminars on diagnosis and management of pediatric emergencies. EMSC
• Pediatric emergency medicine fellowship training program for board-certified pediatricians who want to become board-certified in pediatric emergency medicine.
• Child life staff, trained in child development, help children prepare for procedures and deal with anxiety. Relaxation and mental imagery techniques are used to help control pain.
• Children’s emergency department is one of the largest in the region and families consistently report a positive experience.
