The Midwest Adult Congenital Cardiac (MACC) Center
90 percent of children born with heart defects are now expected to live to adulthood and beyond. Thanks to advances in surgical and medical care, most people born with serious congenital heart defects are now surviving into adulthood. The number of adults with congenital heart disease is increasing at a rate of 5% per year, and it is estimated that adults with congenital heart disease now outnumber children. Unfortunately, many adults with congenital heart disease perceive their condition as “fixed” after surgical repair, believing they require no further follow-up care. This perception can potentially result in long-term health consequences.
To address the needs of adult congenital heart disease patients, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota has joined Children’s Heart Clinic and Minneapolis Heart Institute® to form the Midwest Adult Congenital Cardiac (MACC) Center. At the MACC Center, patients will experience a smooth, uninterrupted transition of healthcare from pediatric specialists to a medical team capable of providing comprehensive cardiac care, helping these individuals to live longer, healthier lives. Our medical professionals address important issues including:
• Personalized education related to the individual’s specific condition
• Potential interventions/surgeries needed in the future
• Endocarditis prophylaxis
• Heart-healthy diets
• Exercise options
• Emotional support
• Appropriate family planning based on the individual’s unique physiology
• Genetic counseling and high risk pregnancy care
With the MACC Center’s combination of specialized care providers, associated hospitals, and the ability to share advanced technologies, we are able offer a full range of outpatient and inpatient care including clinic appointments, advanced cardiac imaging, cardiac catheterizations, EP studies, surgical repair, coordinated high risk obstetric care for women with adult congenital heart disease and more.

The state-of-the-art imaging available at Children's can help diagnose your child's condition and define the best possible course of treatment. At Children's, you'll find:
A specialty in pediatric cardiac imaging.
Imaging expert and pediatric cardiologist, Kelly Gleason Han, MD, is one of a handful of cardiologists in the U.S. with a specialty in cardiac imaging, which involved a two-year, advanced imaging fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
Pediatric-trained radiologists.
Children's radiologists work in concert with cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons to provide procedures. The high level of team training and experience means that children who receive MRIs and CT scans at Children's typically receive lower doses of radiation.
Cardiac catheterization procedures.
In some cases, it may be possible to diagnose and treat your child at the same time through procedures performed in Children's pediatric cardiac catheterization lab, the only one of its kind in the upper Midwest.
A special focus on preventing discomfort.
Team members at Children's focus proactively on preventing the discomfort or anxiety that can occur with some tests. This may involve sedation (for example, through Children's award-winning nitrous oxide program, the use of imagery and pain control techniques taught by child life specialists, or other services provided through the integrative medicine department.
