Detective work is part of our job

Most families come to developmental pediatrics at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota after being referred by their child’s primary physician for direction about a wide range of issues affecting children. We are the specialists who are trained to treat these conditions that can greatly impact a child’s life. Like pediatric detectives, we do everything we can to unravel clues about a child’s developmental, behavioral or learning challenges and help find solutions.

Nobody knows your child better than you do

We begin by talking with families, asking the right questions and offering support as needed. You are the expert when it comes to your kid, so we listen to you and trust your gut. Together we’ll get down to business. We develop a solid game plan that families can follow.

Many health conditions can affect a child’s development, including:

  • Congenital heart defects
  • Prematurity
  • Genetic conditions
  • Down syndrome
  • Neurological conditions
  • Developmental delay and disorders
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Intellectual disability
Once we have a plan, we help arrange multiple services and set up referrals to every department in Children’s, including:

  • Speech and language pathology
  • Audiology
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Psychological services
  • Psychology
  • Neuropsychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Genetics
  • Neurology
  • Feeding clinic
  • Down syndrome clinic
And as an organization dedicated to family-centered care, we offer many child and family services and resources, such as interpretive services.
