Comprehensive care for kids with seizures

epilepsy 1

The pediatric epilepsy program at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota is one of the biggest and best in the country. We help set the national standard when it comes to treating seizures in children from birth to young adulthood. And we provide tons of support to help keep kids with epilepsy learning, growing and loving life.

Because your child deserves the best, Children's is proud to be a Level 4 pediatric epilepsy center — one of only a handful of such centers in the country. That means we offer the highest-quality, most comprehensive epilepsy care available today. It also means we provide advanced brain mapping, early stage clinical trials and treatments you won't find elsewhere.

Electrifying numbers for EEGs and more

Here are just a few of the ways Children’s stands out from the crowd:

  • 486 kids treated for seizures at Children's inpatient unit last year
  • 65% of Twin Cities families who need epilepsy care for their child choose Children's
  • 10-bed epilepsy monitoring unit with spacious private rooms and tons of family-friendly amenities
  • 24/7 video-EEG monitoring by live technical staff for top-notch recording quality
  • 10 new anti-seizure medications brought to market by Children's in collaboration with Minnesota Epilepsy Group
  • 2/3 of patients in the ketogenic diet program improve their seizure control by at least 50 percent

The Lee and Penny Anderson Epilepsy Unit meets all your child's needs on a single floor. A dedicated team coordinates care down to the last detail, from specialist consults to physical therapy. And many services take place in the convenience of your child's private room.

The Karen and George Benz Family Pediatric Neuroscience Center, which houses the epilepsy unit, is truly a research powerhouse. Children's collaborates with Minnesota Epilepsy Group (MEG), an independent academic and clinical research practice, to bring you a winning combination of advanced treatments and groundbreaking clinical trials. MEG also provides seamless follow-up care once your child returns home.

The comforts of home, away from home

Life doesn't stop for epilepsy — even during an extended hospital stay. That's why Children's provides plenty of extras, such as child life professionals who specialize in making the time fly by.

And because we know you want to be by your child's side through it all, we've designed the center with families in mind. From in-room Xboxes and sleeper sofas to family play areas, we do our best to provide the comforts of home.

At Children's, we're experts at treating all types of seizure disorders. But even more than that, we understand kids. We're 100 percent committed to creating brighter tomorrows for our young patients. And we're pretty good at putting parents' minds at ease, too.
