Leader in the science of pediatric brains

neuro 8

At Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, we treat more children with neurological, or brain-related, conditions - from concussions and epilepsy to brain tumors, and beyond - than any other institution in the region.

  • 1,800+ patients treated annually for neurological treatments
  • 450+ brain surgeries to date
  • 500 children seizures
  • 21,000 patient visits annually in our neuroscience clinics (neurology, neurosurgery, behavioral health) 2,500 concussion clinic visits each year

Meeting a growing need

Current trends show a steady increase in traumatic brain injuries, pediatric brain cancers and premature babies with neurological issues. To better serve our community and the Midwest region, we are creating a comprehensive neuroscience program that provides neurological diagnostic and treatment services within one of the largest free-standing children's hospitals in the country. We are continuing to expand our neuroscience offerings to meet the growing needs of patients with both acute and chronic neurological conditions and do so in ways that few other hospitals can provide.

Differentiating Expertise/Technology

  • Unrivaled care: No other institution in the region, and few nationally, have the breadth of specialists.
  • Epilepsy: Home to one of the largest pediatric epilepsy center in U.S., recognized for clinical care and research. One of the few Level 4 pediatric epilepsy programs in country.
  • Technology:
    - Access to a 3 Tesla MRI system
    - Intra-operative MRI
    - Advanced brain mapping for patients with epilepsy and brain tumors – our magneto encephalogram is one of 12 such machines available in the U.S.
    - vEEG monitoring - video electroencephalography
    - Interventional neuro-radiology (e.g., low-dose, minimally invasive image-based technologies and procedures)
    - Minimally invasive neurosurgery techniques, including a laser-induced thermal therapy (Visulase) that uses heat and MRI imaging to treat brain tumors and epilepsy.
  • Brain and spinal cord tumor program: Largest pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumor program in Minnesota.
  • Full cancer program: Largest in Upper Midwest – also ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top in nation.
  • Fetal surgery: Only provider in region.

Breadth of expertise in one location

Children's offers a broad range of neurological-related subspecialties, such as pediatric neurosurgeons, pediatric neurologists and epileptologists, neuro-radiologists, geneticists and pediatric psychologists. As the neuroscience program expands it brings these experts together – under one roof– to provide the latest in neurological diagnostic services and treatment, while providing patients with more efficient and convenient care. We expanded services in many areas:

  • A new 26-bed epilepsy and neurosurgery inpatient unit
  • New neurosurgery operating suite
  • Concussion clinic on both campuses
  • New sleep clinic and diagnostic sleep lab (open 7 nights/6 beds)
  • Neonatal neuro-intensive care at our St. Paul NICU
