Sleep problems are extremely common in infants/children/adolescents and often cause worry, frustration, and anger at home. The Pediatric Sleep Disorders Program at Children's Hospitals and Clinics—St. Paul helps these children and their parents.

Our Sleep Disorders Program has received national accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. There are less than 10 fully accredited pediatric centers in the United States.

Children's Sleep Lab Tour

We offer the full range of diagnostic testing in sleep medicine and have one of only a handful of pediatric only sleep labs in the country. We have a 3-bed sleep lab for the more comprehensive polysomnography testing. This lab is staffed by experienced cardiopulmonary technologists (CPTs) who are all respiratory therapists with additional training and certification. We offer this diagnostic testing service seven nights per week.

Sleep problems are not the same in children as adults. Sleep disorders in children may range from difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up. Some of the more common sleep disorders in children are:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)/Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) characterized by noisy breathing or snoring causing frequent sleep related arousals
  • Night Terrors
  • Sleep walking
  • Insomnia
  • Sleep phase shifts
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Frequent night time awakenings
  • Bedwetting
  • Narcolepsy
  • Head banging and rocking

What the Pediatric Sleep Program Offers

We work with infants, children, adolescents and young adults (along with their parents). Children referred to the Pediatric Sleep Program are evaluated by one of our four board-certified pediatric sleep physicians.

After an initial referral to our Sleep Program, an outpatient clinic appointment is scheduled. This clinic appointment is comprehensive and includes: (1) a detailed sleep history, (2) a general medical history, (3) a complete social history, (4) psychological and developmental screening, and (5) a physical examination.

This evaluation may result in recommendations for sleep laboratory diagnostic testing, behavioral adjustments, surgical intervention and occasionally, medications.

Whatever the recommendation may be, the Program will assist with scheduling, facilitating diagnostic testing, and provide follow up clinical management as appropriate.

Pediatric Sleep Program Resources

Our program resources include four board certified pediatric sleep physicians trained in all aspects of pediatric sleep disorders and RN’s with specialized training in sleep disorders. Administrative support staff assist with documentation and insurance notification.

In addition, children and their families can access the full range of support services provided by Children's Hospitals and Clinics.
