Palliative Care & Hospice Program
Helping kids live better lives
Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota’s palliative and hospice care team is made up of specialists from many different backgrounds with a wide range of expertise. There’s no child too big or too small to receive our care. We treat everyone from preemies, newborns and toddlers to adolescents and young adults.
We add to the medical care your child is already receiving, by combining advanced medical techniques with age and symptom-appropriate pain control, physical therapy, rehabilitation, integrative medicine and more. Together, we deliver complex care to help kids so they can feel better and live longer.
We treat kids, not conditions
We treat children with a vast array of serious medical conditions, but our focus is entirely on helping kids feel better. Our services are available for all infants, children and adolescents who are at risk of dying, no matter the cause. Some of the more common reasons we see children are due to these conditions:
Easing your child’s suffering
Each child’s care is specially designed to minimize the symptoms he or she is experiencing in order to live each day more fully. Treating pain doesn’t necessarily mean higher doses of powerful pain medication. Instead, we seek out treatment options that can soothe their pain or discomfort without causing additional symptoms such as drowsiness and nausea.
To do this, we rely on a vast array of services that include drug and non-drug therapies. We work alongside experts from our pain clinic and integrative medicine clinic to help control their symptoms. Services available include:
Studies have shown that children who receive palliative care experience, on average, nine distressing symptoms, which we are well equipped to manage. Some of the common symptoms we treat include:
And as an organization dedicated to family-centered care, we offer many child and family services and resources, like interpretive services.
