Giving to “Delivering Next Generation Care”

Cardiovascular Services

Our Vision for Children

Healthy hearts for more children achieved through earlier diagnosis, earlier intervention, less invasive treatments, and continuing care as they grow into young adults.

Where We Are Today

Among metro-area hospitals, Children’s today cares for nearly two-thirds of pediatric patients hospitalized for cardiac surgery. Children’s has the only certified pediatric echocardiography program in the state. Outcomes rank among the top 10 pediatric surgical and medical programs in the United States. Expertise and service span the cardiovascular care of children from pre-birth to young adult.

Our Dream for Tomorrow

Physical space and technologies that enable us to:

  • Diagnose heart defects earlier, even in utero, and intervene as soon as possible to correct them. State-of-the art imaging equipment designed to “see” into the heart will be an increasingly vital tool in early diagnosis. Also, an enhanced telemedicine capability will be important in diagnosing heart defects in more children from afar. With this capability, physicians across the Upper Midwest will be able to more easily and quickly receive echocardiogram interpretations and counsel from Children’s cardiology specialists. •

  • Conduct clinical research to advance the treatment for children and young adults with heart conditions. This would encompass the study of complex surgical repair, advanced diagnosis and interventional cardiology, specialized anesthesia, and critical care therapies. We are also committed to preparing the next generation of cardiovascular specialists.

  • Diagnose and treat heart rhythm problems that can result in dangerous, irregular heartbeats and even lead to sudden death – an event that is always shocking when it happens to a healthy young adult. Expanded electrophysiology labs will enable us to provide the latest and best treatments for abnormal heart rhythms.

  • Provide an environment conducive to the special healing needs of our cardiology patients. A special cardiac care unit within our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) will enable Children’s to offer the privacy and family-centered focus that are essential to improved outcomes.
