Giving to “Delivering Next Generation Care”

Neonatal Intensive Care Services

Our Vision for Children

Best outcomes for more infants born too early or with serious medical conditions through the application of fetal diagnostics and therapies.

Where We Are Today

When a baby is born prematurely or with a life-threatening condition, families turn to Children’s. We care for more high-risk infants than any other health care organization in the Upper Midwest. Yet, because of limited capacity, we are unable to serve all babies who need our care. Our NICU programs are among the best internationally in rates of survival and reduction of major complications of extremely premature babies.

Our Dream for Tomorrow

To improve the outcomes for more neonatal patients through:

  • Expanded, fully modernized space. Additional space will, quite simply, allow us to serve more infants and serve them better. A new neonatal unit will feature additional beds and more private family space. It will enable us to integrate new therapeutic technologies – and create an ideal physical and sensory environment for the nurture of premature infants.

  • Improved diagnostic capabilities. Early identification of health problems before a baby is born can be critical to survival and to a life free of severe disabilities. New diagnostic capabilities will provide early insight into medical conditions and enable us to begin care prior to birth.

  • Neonatal research. Much has been learned, but much remains unknown about preventing premature births and new procedures that promise to reduce risks associated with prematurity. Through increased research, Children’s will advance knowledge and understanding of approaches to help prevent and eliminate the complications of prematurity.

  • Comprehensive, long-term follow-up. Children born prematurely often face developmental issues. By enhancing a follow-up clinic staffed with developmental specialists, our goal is to strengthen a unique service designed specifically to address the special needs of children.

  • Pre-eminent mother-baby care. Children’s and Allina Hospitals & Clinics are collaborating to create a pre-eminent mother-baby program on both campuses that will provide the most advanced prenatal, perinatal, and neonatal care possible in the most caring and comfortable environment for mothers, babies, and their families.
