Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Care at Children’s
The hematology/oncology team provides inpatient care through dedicated hematology/oncology units at Children’s – Minneapolis and Children’s – St. Paul. These units contain 38 private rooms and a total of 40 beds, including seven class A isolation rooms.
The environment at Children’s includes:
- The full range of clinical experts, including a pain management team, care managers, nutrition services, social workers, child life specialists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, psychologists, and chaplains, all of whom are highly experienced in caring for children and teens coping with cancer and blood disorders.
- Nationally recognized nursing excellence. More than 75 designated pediatric hematology/oncology nurses staff the hematology/oncology units. The Children’s program attracts and retains some of the best and most experienced hematology/oncology nurses in the upper Midwest. Nurses undergo intensive hematology/oncology training and have an average of 10 years of experience at Children’s in hematology/oncology units.
- Pediatric intensive care units (PICUs.) In the PICUs in the Minneapolis and St. Paul hospitals, patients typically experience one-to-one nursing care, provided by intensive care nurses with an average of over 10 years of experience in Children’s PICUs. Physician care is provided by pediatric intensivists who remain in-house 24 hours per day. A dedicated pediatric pharmacist is on-site 24 hours per day.
- Inpatient complimentary and alternative (CAM) medicine integrated into care. As a standard of care, the Children’s hematology/oncology team believes that all children and teens should be taught a minimum of one mind-body technique or self-regulatory skill within the first few weeks of cancer/blood disorders treatment. The ability to take control of an element of treatment can be important to the patient’s psychological well-being and can have an impact on overall outcomes.
- A nationally recognized, exclusively pediatric environment. Children’s was the first Twin Cities hospital system to achieve the prestigious Magnet designation, which is awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in recognition of nursing excellence. Since the inception of the U.S. News & World Report pediatric hospital survey in 2007, Children’s has made the “America's Best Children’s Hospitals” list annually.
Unparalleled family support
Each room in the hematology/oncology units include in-room sleeping accommodations, laundry facilities, showers, and a family lounge. In addition, hematology/oncology units feature:
